If Moeen plays, do we need Root? Will that get Taylor in? Send Root back to Yorks to get some heavy runs in ahead of the India tour?

I'd have Taylor.

I think part of the theory of Morgan is that he's an alternative captain to Cook in the long term, and support for his captaincy in the short term.

alternative captain?

2 ways to look at that I suppose

Cook may not be around as captain for very long, and we aren't exactly blessed with captaincy material in the side

4 home test series (with lovely seaming wickets) coming up with only an away tour to WI in between, might give Morgan time to develop enough as a batsman to be assured of his place in the side when Cook gets mullered abroad again

I'd have thought that Broad is probably next in line

He's got that Aussie thousand yard stare. Like Steve Waugh. And Alan Shearer.

He did have some tough series, like home and away to Pakistan, which was very hard batting. But he has done exactly nothing to get his place back, or even suggest interest in getting his place back.

Is he definitely taller than the stumps when he is in his stance?

how about ... Cook, Robson, Bell, Root, Ali, Woakes, Prior, Stokes, Broad, Anderson, Onions

Anderson seems to be in decline a bit so may not be in there much longer - Prior and Stokes at 7 and 8 seems to give enough batting depth, while Root, Ali, Woakes and Stokes means there are plenty of bowling options

There seems to be a rather general assumption that England are going to make sweeping changes, and rather a lot being read into the Lions tour of Sri Lanka.

If Trott comes back, he is essenially replacing KP since Stokes will almost certainly be given the summer.

Flower said there would be big changes. OK, he's not there anymore, but maybe the intention went beyond himself. He said only Cook had a place in the side. And a new coach may bring in new ideas. And we got thrashed 5-0.

The last team, with Rankin, Bairstow (WK), Borthwick, Carberry in it looked a volatile one. There isn't really a consistent team to pick anymore.
