Well, Carberry is in possession. I think he'll start the summer.

Hard to guess. New coach. New lead selector. Suggestions in the press are that Morgan, Borthwick and Onions will play. So that leaves an opener (Carberry/Root/Robson/Chopra) a three or four depending on where Bell bats (Root/Ballance/Taylor/Robson) and a keeper (see above).

Perhaps, but if they decided against Carberry, would they call up Robson on the back of a very good lions tour, given that, with Bell at 3, it would leave a middle order of Root, new boy, Stokes, and a keeper who hasn't been able to buy a run for a year.

would Robson be that new boy? They'd have to rely on Root to bowl off spin, or pick Borthwick at 8 if he was. I can't imaging they'd pick Kerrigan over Borthwick with only 2 established batsmen in the top 6.

Morgan is injured atm, of course, and has no first class or test match pedigree

I keep coming back to Moeen

I'd have thought Moeen could be in for the spinner's job. But I remember someone saying in an interview they'd heard Borthwick was going to be picked. These rumours are nearly always wrong. But with so little to go on, I gave it more credence than i normally would.

Morgan feels like a long shot to me, but he's getting some press that says he's going to play.

I'm wondering if England axed KP in the belief that he would be forgotten in the event of home wins over two notoriously bad travellers. But if it goes wrong, things will be ugly.

assuming you are right, and England go Cook, Carbs, Bell, Root, Morgan, Stokes, then Moeen would have fit in at 7 as a PT offie, with Prior at 8, or
Borthwick would have to bat 8 with Prior at 7.

put like that, I suppose the latter is probably the more like option of the 2

If Morgan is out or not selected, then that would tend to put Moeen back in the frame, with Borthwick missing out

I'm still not convinced that they'll go with Onions. With Stokes in the side, England only need 3 seamers, and Bresnan, Broad and Ando have those slots sewn up atm, IMO. Onions might be in the squad, but will likely only play if one of the other 3 isn't fit

That gives room to fit Woakes at 7 with Prior at 8

Sorted!

Although the new breed of Indian test player might just travel a lot better than some of the stalwarts they have replaced

They didn't do so well in NZ. But yes, I think they'll be hard to beat. I'm not sure our team is any good.

If Moeen is a part time off spinner, then Borthwick is a part time leg spinner.

I'd expect to see Trott and Root back for Sri Lanka.
