One innings of real note in almost two years, the selectors have shown they have the bottle to dump Sehwag and Gambhir.

That is totally incorrect and misleading . To prove that he played many good innings in two years here is the series averages record taken from cricinfo.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... iew=series

His last two years series averages in reverse order:
Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Australia in India), 2012/13 - 51
New Zealand in India Test Series, 2012 - 21
Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India in Australia), 2011/12- 36 (Second highest Indian scorer (287 runs ) after Virat (300 runs) )
West Indies in India Test Series, 2011/12 - 44
Pataudi Trophy (India in England), 2011 - 34
India in South Africa Test Series, 2010/11 - 82
New Zealand in India Test Series, 2010/11 - 32
Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Australia in India), 2010/11- 134
India in Sri Lanka Test Series, 2010-78 - 78
South Africa in India Test Series, 2009/10 - 71
India in Bangladesh Test Series, 2009/10 - 132
Test FL's - 8 , ODI and Tests Combo FL's - 1, ODI World Cup - 1, ODI FL's - 7, ODI and T20i combo FL's - 1 ,

This is SRT over the last two years, against top eight sides, compared to his team mates, including the ones dropped/retired.

Yes Adi, mighty impressive; last ton was over two years ago now and just 8 fifties in 33 innings.

So now we are looking at tons as his average has shown to be good enough to stay in team.

His average is down among the dropped players.

Maybe he offers something in the dressing room, or is inspiring, but on pure performances, he is hanging on. Which usually makes you quite vulnerable at veteran status. But if India think he is their best bet at four, then fair enough. However, it does seem clear that he isn't carrying the youngsters.

Yes, an average against the better sides that is nearly 20 runs less than a player who decided to call it quits and according to you is in a different class than Tendulkar.

I am not a fan of removing a good form of player because it looks any player bad.

Still, Average against better sides in past two years: 79 (Is it bad)

I hope Australia, SouthAfrica, England, Srilanka are good teams. Maybe you feel only England are good team and hence say that 34 average is bad. IMO the average is 70 but if you want to only consider 34 fair enough. We all look at things differently.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Australia in India), 2012/13 - 51
Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India in Australia), 2011/12- 36 (Second highest Indian scorer (287 runs ) after Virat (300 runs) )

It's not 71. As Arthur posted above, it's 32.

It's a question of stats doing tricks. I showed averages of all series in past 2 years. He has had some failures like every cricketer goes in odd series. But he covers in next.

Now as per stats that Arthur posted his average is shown as 32, because some series he has scored heavily has not been included . I am not a fan of removing good series from a cricketers career and then concluding that see in other series he averages less. if you remove good series form any cricketers career, he will be made to look bad.
Test FL's - 8 , ODI and Tests Combo FL's - 1, ODI World Cup - 1, ODI FL's - 7, ODI and T20i combo FL's - 1 ,
T20 Franchisee FL's - 7, T20i Cup FL's- 1, T20 FL's- 5 , 50 Overs Domestic FL's - 1, 40 Overs Domestic FL's- 1

Adi - we're currently in 2013.

How can a series from 2009 / 2010 be in the last two years?

It's not stat's doing tricks, you're including series which are not in the last two years.

Including every series from the last 2 years he averages 32.

I didn't take off any runs made against Zim/Ban because I knew SRT had made runs against them. I did it because I do it for all stats these days, as I finally came to the conclusion that runs made against these pre-beaten teams don't have the same sort of value. For all I knew, he hadn't made any runs against them. I'm not confident really that taking SRT to SA will make any difference either way.

He hasn't played Zimbabwe or Bangladesh in the last couple of years

It doesn't look like India has played these sides. These are the full stats, with no varnish (I only included those who had 500 runs before.

It's getting in circles. You think he should be dropped, fair enough. I think he shouldn't be dropped.
