I would definitely select Sammy over Edwards.

He isnt doing terribly but he is being given undue credit IMO. His captaincy record is no better than that of Gayle.

And whether he is a better captain than Gayle or not is frankly immaterial. Because if he is replaced as a captain now then Gayle would not be the one replacing him. It will be either Kirk Edwards, Ramdin or Darren Bravo.

The point is that I dont think Sammy should be in the side and I havent seen anything special in Sammy's captaincy that would suggest to me that someone like Ramdin or Lil Bravo would do a worse job.

That would allow WI to pick a better bowler than Sammy, for a change.

Good points, shanks....

Now, let's look at the win-loss records after this first Test in Lords:

Sammy 2-7
Chanderpaul 1-10
Adams 4-8
Hooper 4-11
Gayle 3-9
Lara 11-26

So, when you work out the percentages, Shiv has the worst win-loss record, and then Gayle is a ratio of one win to three losses. Sammy's win-loss record will drop below Gayle's after this Test....

Adams has the best win-loss record (1:2), followed closely by Lara, and then Hooper. So, these stats show us that Sammy has the worst win-loss record after Shiv....

Yes, this side has shown some "determination" and "spirit", but they still lost. This team is carrying too many passengers (Powell, Barath, Sammy, etc), and it's missing good quality players such as Gayle, Sarwan, Nash and Narine. It's all well and good for opponents to say, you played well, and showed more fight than such-and-such, but it counts for little when the team is losing in the end, and not winning as much as it used to.

Is it any surprise then that hardly any WI fans turned out at Lords?

I am aware that Kieran and Adrian have played far few tests, yet, they have only managed to score at a T20 average in test chances they have got so far. The side is packed with under performing players. I don't see it helping Sammy's captaincy at all. The win - loss record of Sammy as captain will get worse.

Neither of them will in all likelyhood be even a footnote in the copybook of captaincy.

Holding summed Sammy up pretty well; An excellent chap to have at the helm while rebuilding a young side but someone who may hold the side back in the long run.

Personally I don't really care about win loss ratios or such stats, Sammy is the best thing to have happened to the West Indies in recent times and he's under valued as a player as well, the time will come when the Windies can stand on their own two feet again and he'll become a spare part but they'll owe a debt to Sammy when it happens.

mspr1nt :
Cue "at least we tried" rhetoric. Hurrah! Lets celebrate mediocrity to disguise inability to apply yourself and questionable captaincy.

In every match Sammy plays I see a bit of improvement in his technique which shows that he is a hard-working cricketer.

With the team WI have you can't expect them to win matches. At present when WI play it is all about whether they show fight against teams like England, South Africa and Australia or just roll over like they used to do in the past and that too with a better team.

The captain is as good as the team at this levels. This test match proves it yet again. Sammy has been brilliant in this test with his batting and couple of wickets and catches. But he just cant get best out of his players because the players are the ones who will more often than not won't perform well. I think he is going to have a very bad captaincy record.

Now, let's look at the win-loss records after this second Test at Trent Bridge:

Sammy 2-8
Chanderpaul 1-10
Adams 4-8
Hooper 4-11
Gayle 3-9
Lara 11-26

Gayle is a ratio of one win to three losses. Sammy's win-loss record is now a ratio of one win to four losses. It's clear that Gayle was the more successful captain....

I don't think we can tell until Sammy's career is finished.

However, do we not also need to take into account the relative abilities of the sides being captained and the strength of their opposition? Also, performance compared to expectations?

Let WI play NZ and then comment on Sammy's captaincy. Playing against Australia and especially England with the team Sammy has there is no chance of winning but at least they showed fight.
