I was having a chat with Rohit's coach on weekends drink party couple of weeks before. He too had similar views about people who kept on vouching for Sachin's resignation. So do our ex clubmates. I am glad for Sachin there is so much backing for him worldwide, that he can ignore his critics and throw light on what people say.

Very true, though I wouldnt say they are selfish, look at Mark Waugh he was still very near the top of his game yet recognised that it was time to go, in order to give younger players a chance.

Right or Wrong, I would prefer to see SRT while he was still at the top of his game, rather than become like Jack Hobbs who hung around for 2 seasons too many and ending up being a shadow of his former self.

Kind of an oxymoronic statement really, if you don't retire when you are playing well that means you are retiring when you are playing badly, and how is being dead weight benefical to the team or the country.

Take Dravid, he had an excellent series against England, and while I do think he would have bounced back at some stage, did India gain anything by him not playing well in Australia?

No.

So why would it have been selfish for him to go out on the back of being the only player to give the country a sense of pride with the bat in a dismal series?

The problem is media creates the stories and takes up polls like Should Sachin retire etc. Its obvious and medias job but they do it in crazy way. On basis of polls even those who don't follow cricket start to jump to conclusions that Sachin is selfish. I saw every Indian news channel was talking about Sachin retiring after the Australia tour. That involved some ex cricketers as well. To be specific one of them was Saurav. After one flop ODI series he got back in form. Saurav did not say anything, neither did most of those TV critics about retirement. Infact the same news channels started saying Sachin is one of the worlds best all time cricketer, the torch bearer of Team India. There is no consistency at all. Every innings they change their minds. One day supporter , other day critic. I cannot understand how they change their mind every other series and at times every other test or ODI.

My personal opinion is that players of Sachins calibre should be given a time to choose retirement. Also i think Sachin won't take advantage of that. He won't certainly play after his body cannot match the requirement of a field game of 5 days. A fitness freak like Sachin would know when his body is not proper for international standard cricket and Sachin is one of those who listens to his conscience. If he is fit and performing he should get preference. Why should we discriminate him on basis of age. Do we want younger players with bad performance just for sake he is young than Sachin. To be specific fitter than Gautam and Sehwag who are younger than many years and injured now and then even being specialist batsman like Sachin.
