If I could pick one of these 2 to add to the Indian side, I'd pick Kallis.

for an all-time World XI, Kallis is closer to getting in than Lara for me

Despite the fact that Kallis has more runs at a better average with more centuries and more consistent run scoring pattern overall.

Surely runs is the criteria to judge a batsman. If you are talking about the best I have seen then I would much rather watch Junior rather than Rahul Dravid.Does that make him a better player though?Obviously not.

Runs is the criteria?

If you say so.

I'm not just talking about pleasing on the eye. If I was then M Waugh would be my vote as the best batsman of all time.

IMO, Kallis is a more valuable player than Lara was, even when we compare them as pure batsmen. In a crisis situation in a test match, Kallis is rock solid.

There were a few crisis situations when Lara came through; most often, he didn't.

Let's take 2004 series in West Indies vs England. It was a 4-test series. When Harmison has stories to tell his grandchildren, this will be his top story.

England takes a 3-0 lead. Lara's scores in the first 3 tests were: 23, 0, 0, 8, 36, 33 (average 16.7). He was the skipper.

Then comes the meaningless 4th and final test in Antigua (notorious for centuries and drawn matches). There was no pressure. You could swing your bat in all directions. Lara bats brilliantly on day 1 and day 2. West Indies score >700 runs. It was so easy to bat that even Flintoff scores a century. Well it is Antigua, what do you expect, another drawn match. Lara fans retain the memory of his magnificent unbeaten 400. In what circumstances?

Not only runs but the no. of centuries,Batting average, longevity,Consistency, etc.
Kallis trumps Lara in all those departments.

Cynomis

Dont forget his efforts at Cape Town(century in each innings) earlier this year against India despite carrying a painful injury on a tricky surface with Harby in full form in the 2nd innings when the team was in dire straits.
i know Lara has produced such memorable innings in his career but Kallis is more consistent IMO.i can rarely remember him having a bad patch of more than one or two series.

Kallis is a great player but Lara destroyed attacks and could play spin better.

It's all about opnions Shanky.
Cook will no doubt score more runs, play for longer and score more tons than any other Englishman.

Will this make him our best ever player?
