How Good Is Timothy Bresnan?

Only time will tell, but Bresnan has the makings, by most definitions, of a genuine all-rounder. He seems to be able to adapt his bowling to meet all challenges and he has the time to improve his already solid batsmanship to a standard that may see him bat at #7, or perhaps even #6.

Would someone like Samit Patel make more sense?

Or maybe Ali Cook can come on with his threatening leggies...

I was just thinking that you would have to drop a seamer to fit the extra spinner in, then consider the heat and the risk of injury. I can't see Morgan being dropped.

When did he face one of those?

Seriously - and as we seem to have found yet another excuse to bang on about 5-man attacks, another stuck record comment: given the nature of the pitches and the climate, I don't have a problem with England resting a batsman in Sri Lanka and accomodating an extra spinner by moving Prior and Bresnan up one, but there is no point whatsoever in playing 5 bowlers for the sake of it.

Every single sucessful 5-man attack has contained at least two genuine all-rounders - i.e. either 2 bowlers or a bowler and wicketkeeper who are good enough to bat consistently in the top 6 or 7. On his current career curve I wouldn't bet against Bresnan achieving that, but right now, like Broad, he's a bowler who can bat (so, incidentally were Richard Hadlee, Malcolm Marshall and Wasim Akram, so it's hardly a disgrace).

How good is he? Well hes good enough to be part of the best test squad we have had for many years, his bowling has become so good that he is producing regularly and he has the ability to even take out the best, that dravid dismissal in the 1st innings will live long in the memory.

As for his batting, well its a embarrasment of riches to have him at 8, i just hope he gets a test century one day because he so deserves one.

Bresnan is a good player, and has the potential to be a genuine all rounder, he needs more games under the belt, and the signs are so far looking good, I'll reserve judgement until he has more games under his belt.

Good, Adi. i thought I was alone on this one. Slightly annoyingly, everyone seems to think you're an idiot if you want five bowlers, and adopts a weary stoicism in the face of your misguided foolishness...

Bresnan, in the T20WC looked cumbersome and unathletic in the field. Now he looks a very competent outfielder with gasp inducing throw, making himself into an asset. Everything about Bresnan is impressive. He's even very confident without being conceited.

Mildred, it does not annoys me at all. That is because I understand that every poster has been brought up in different cricketing culture, played at different levels of cricket, played in different formats like 20 overs,40 overs, 50 overs, has had different coaches who influence cricketing plans, each one's experience at street/proper cricket varies from months to years, we have watched different international matches which influence our opinion and everyone thinks differently about a situation. The views are bound to differ, so i prefer agreeing to disagree while respecting others opinions. :thumb

I actually like to think theres a middle ground, where there are times that a 5th bowler is needed, and times when hes superflous. On the Sub-continent a 5th bowler is needed to share the work load, in England theres is no need for 5 bowlers, yet in the sub-continent where temperatures and humidity is higher there is a definate case for 5 bowlers.

Again it comes down to a horses for courses attitude.

A stark contrast to 2009 where both Bresnan and Onions made their test debuts against the West Indies. Onions was getting all the rave reviews, even touted as Englands version of Glenn McGrath. Tim Bresnan was merely seen as making the numbers up and at best a containing bowler.

Two years later, Bresnan most improved player in world cricket while Onions can't even get a look in.

Onions is an attacking bowler, who bowls at the stumps, hunting LBW and bowled. As a result, he leaks runs. He's very much in the Simon Jones mould of lots of wickets, but poor economy rate. Bresnan meanwhile, is a line and length merchant who rarely gives freebies away and has to be attacked to be scored off. He takes wickets through pressure and consistency, rather than magic balls (although that Dravid ball says otherwise!).

Against sides like the West Indies, Bangladesh and New Zealand, it may be worth looking at an Onions to rip through a top order. But against the major nations, it is Bresnan every time for me. I can see him having a sensational Test career if he remains grounded and stays injury free!

However, on his first match in this years county championship, returning from injury he took a five fer.

Onions did get dropped in SA. Average there 45.75. I would prefer Bresnan to Onions.
