Wins for Durham, Somerset and Lancs whilst Warks and Hants tied in the first round of the new One Day Cup

Durham secured up a bonus win over Essex to go top, but I don't know why they got a bonus point, because no-one has explained it to me

Somerset beat Surrey on DLS, but again... I don't know why. The game was reduced to 33 overs a side. Surrey scored 243 in their 33 overs, but Somerset only had a target of 238, which they achieved on the last ball of their innings.... which makes no sense to me. They both batted the same number of overs and Surrey scored more but lost. Even if the first innings was rain interrupted forcing an over reduction, then surely Somerset (who knew they only had to bat 33 overs) should have had a target higher than Surrey's, not lower.... so I'm a bit baffled (which is becoming my default position in life)

early days yet, of course, but the big names haven't flocked over to sign up as overseas players. Bates has signed for us and Wellington was playing for Somerset yesterday, but I haven't spotted any other overseas players. Perry has signed for Hants, but isn't here yet, so maybe there are others who have yet to make an appearance

or maybe there will be signings for the T20 part of the season

Alana King at Lancs, of course

Perry is T20 only for Hants, it seems, as is Grace Harris for Surrey

Heather Graham has signed for Notts..... sorry.... Blaze

some disparity in the size of squads. Durham, Essex and Warks have 15 or 16 player squads. Lancs, Hants and Somerset have 20 with Surrey 22 and Notts.... sorry.... Blaze 23

been a couple of ties in this competition. The top teams seem pretty evenly matched

I've been enjoying watching it, even if Durham are a little outclassed in terms of personnel. Before the season began I thought we had a pretty decent squad, but some of the teams are packed with current England internationals and we find it difficult to get anywhere near their batting prowess

Durham and Somerset opened up the T20 women's county cup with a bit of thriller

Durham posted 124-9 in their 20 overs. Somerset replied with.......... 124-9. This being a straight knockout comp, it went to a super over which Durham won. They restricted Somerset to 8-2 before scoring 9 in their first 3 balls.... go straight to QF's, do not pass go do not collect £200

It's a compact 16 team competition. QF's are next Saturday and Finals day is on BH Monday
