Steve Smith didn't get a gig.... maybe we should be picking up the phone. He's the only member of the sandpaper crew who hasn't played for us yet

Now there's an idea!

We may well have Stokes early season,of course.
Wonder if our management have been super astute and delayed appointment of overseas until after IPL auction to have pick of non-selected??
No, doubt it.

I suspect you're right. I - perhaps wrongly - assumed one reason Bancroft isn't coming back is because they had identified a replacement. It doesn't look like it at the minute.

sounds too much like a plan.

Surrey haven't got any yet, so doubtless they'll throw massive money at Smith without breaking any salary cap

Sponsors will foot the bill!

Maybe Woody will fancy sponsor him for us - just a bit of loose change with his newly found wealth.
And so neatly back to the beginning of the thread!

just spotted this

there was a conversation about him on another thread recently, so I checked his stats out

his last 11 red ball innings (3 tests and 4 FC) reaped
72, 82, 62, 28, 15, 17, 54, 57, 43, 41, 56

the Riverside will offer him a new challenge, lets hope he can meet it

bats 3 usually, but that would mean Borthwick dropping down the order. If Lees gets the nod for England -v- NZ then he might have to open

Ah... he's with us for the first 7 matches, so If Lees does go off to join up with England then we'll lose both of them at the same time

As things stand, I imagine our batting line up will be something along the lines of
1.Lees
2. Jones
3. Petersen
4. Bedingham
5. Stokes/Borthwick
6. Borthwick/Eckersley

obviously a lot depends on what England decide to do with Stokes.... they may decide that he can play but can't bowl, which causes us a problem because then we either have to rely on Borthwick bowling a full 5th bowler complement (what could possibly go wrong?) or we have to drop Mr Ned and throw the gloves to Bedders....

or we have ask Petersen to open

Don't think we'll see much of Stokes but I'd like Trevaskis to be a regual pick, thnk he's got all-round abilit y.
Early season I'd go
Lees
Jones/Dickson
Borthwick
Bedingham
Peterson
Trevaskis
Eckersley
Potts
Raine
Coughlin / Salisbury
Rushworth

Assuming Carse won't be ready

I wasn't familiar with the name but he looks like a very good player.

He was awarded player of the series against India. Lots of fifties without pushing on, but seemingly the India series was particularly bowler friendly, so ending up leading run scorer in a series like that might suggest that he has the tools to be able to cope up here.

Unlike WL, I don't think we'd be signing a top order player and then ask him to bat in the middle order. I think he'll bat somewhere in the top 3. That being said, I think I can guess what WL's reply to that might be and I'll agree with him on that in advance

A lot will depend on how much Lees is available to us but the pleasing feature is we look to have a top six all capable of batting in any of those positions.
