It occurs to me that it will be very hard for the ECB in 2023 to rewind to the end of 2019 and install the 2 divisions despite the guarantees they seemingly gave to Gloucs and Northants. Imagine if Notts won the CC next year and were then relegated? There'd be hell on, so I'm confident they would only do that for Durham. If we continue to progress the way we have done and make astute overseas signings, then I see no reason why we couldn't test out that theory.

not that it matters, of course, since the ECB decided it would be a good idea to have 24 dead rubbers once we got to the business end of the season

Yeah, it'd surely have to go on this season , need to finish in the top 2 if it does. Although maybe the ECB will do a Dallas and regard the last 2 seasons as a dream / nightmare!

No top 4 as div 1 would have 10 teams.

We'd be safe if they went top 4 in our div because we have the Surrey points still to add on and I struggle to see any scenario where we wouldn't finish in the top 4.... unless the ECB do what the ECB like to do, of course
If Durham and Notts were to enter div 1 next year, which two teams would miss out? I'm guessing Surrey and perhaps Kent? I can't remember the placings at the end of the 2019 season if I'm honest
