Even if the weather is quite poor, it's not as if the match will need all four days. If Somerset prepare the pitch which we all expect them to (not just in order to try and win, but also to rule out any chance of Essex accruing enough extra bonus points that the final result becomes irrelevant), the match might not even need two days worth of playing time to reach a conclusion.

Someone will be ending this season by winning the double.

Somerset aren't going to prepare a "turnton" with Harmer in the opposition ranks. Unfortunately, the weather suggests a draw.

Harmer is a threat regardless of the surface, I would suggest. And in any event, I'd always be more comfortable with taking the positive stance of playing to your own strengths, than the negative stance of trying to negate the opposition's strengths. They've named all three of their spinners in their squad.

But first and foremost, Somerset need to take 20 Essex wickets in amongst the rain. I really don't see that they have any option but to prepare a turner.

Thanks for everything Pothas. You'll be missed. My nickname for you was apt and I will never forget it. For the last time, arise Sir Nic.

Kent are 8-3. They'll probably only get 500 from there.

Couple of early wickets for Cook and Vijay out. Essex on top.

Think I counted six ducks in the games so far...and play not yet underway at the Riverside!

Just did search for why the divisions are changing numbers and got a load of corporate double talk reminiscent of Peter Moores' time as England coach.

Not relevant to this thread but...just seen the story about Tasmania losing a one day game against Victoria from the position of needing 5 runs from 11 overs with 5 wickets in hand!

Can't see any chance of play at the Riverside. It's not heavy rain but the sky is filled in and the forecast poor.
