The cynic in me asks why he wasn't 're-engaged for the 2018 IPL season. His lack of playing and coaching experience at 1st class level must be a concern.
However, sincerely hope that I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Yes, it seems a risky choice but time will tell. It's another instance where it'd be interesting to see who the other applicants were - if there were any! With this preseason tour imminent they'll surely have to announce a captain very soon.

Is it not because the Gujarat Lions disappeared when Chennai re-appeared after their ban? I confess I have no idea how these things work

I didn't know the name either, but IPL was my first thought when I read the link... we still have no T20 head coach as far as I'm aware... that might make him a handy fall back should we find ourselves unable to recruit one

Good to see Will Gidman back in some capacity. I rated him as a player but, like Ben Raine, competition was just too stiff back in their time with us

Presumably tomorrow -they can hardly announce a touring squad without nominating a captain.

I'd have thought so but nothing can be ruled out with this lot!

Membership card has arrived. Sir Ian a little less bullish in his letter - a desire to " finish strongly" rather than predictions of promotion.
And they have named the touring party without a captain! Interesting name in the squad is Ned Eckersley who is on trial. Pretty modest FC average of 31 but someone who I think would at the very least be a useful squad member - another wicketkeeping option too!

I didn't notice their absence, either unavailable for some reason or - probably more likely - not in Franklin's early season plans?

Before I realised that I wondered if he could have been an option to replace Bancroft if he were to be called into the Ashes squad, think he meets the eligibility criteria for FC cricket over here but it does not appear to be his forte.

61 not out in the second innings.

From The Telegraph - Durham " resigned" to not having Bancroft for the first Championship match because he has been ordered to attend an end-of-season awards dinner! Tim Bostock quoted as saying its a ridiculous decision and Bancroft is going to leave the dinner early in order to get here as quickly as possible.
It's a bit annoying but not a big deal imo, just one of those things.

Typically insensitive action of Australian authority not realizing you're missing the purpose of an awards ceremony if you mandate participants to attend. Leaving the ceremony early only compounds the situation.
So much for Cricket Australia attempting to create goodwill after their ball tampering disgrace.

Yes, if he's leaving early - or is allowed to - then there's no reason why he should have to attend in the first place.

IPL starts 23rd March- Aussie participants arriving late because they have to attend awards events? Doubt it.
And Warner is participating in IPL. :d'oh:
