Glad you like it, Yorks, and send us some more from your county, huh? And thanks to FTS for the idea, since it's fun to do. As you can see, I'm just wandering along from one to another, eg that business with the seagull pinching the bail at the second Lions Vs AUS match, and the flying ants during the CT in SA led me (at the time) to a Cricinfo article on other odd things that wander onto cricket pitches (see "Animal antics" at http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/266571.html ), and I have a range of beasts to look up. However, I decided to start with the camel first. And then, when I zoomed out to find out where Abheypur Village was, in the grand global scheme of things, my eye was struck by Nepal, and a few years ago I was dealing with a US academic who did a mental health survey in Nepal, so I zoomed off to Kathmandu (so much quicker than flying!) and went looking for a green circle with a stripe in the middle, and there was TU, and they were off to play in the Al Dhaid Cricket Village, and so on. Cricinfo is pretty deficient when you get off the beaten track, so I'm assembling quite a long list of little grounds to follow up. You discover all sorts of interesting stuff doing this. And of course it saves me having to follow the dismal performance of the star-studded underachieving Blues. :no :no :no

Chail Cricket Ground, Himachal Pradesh, India

Chail Cricket Ground

wkimapia: http://wikimapia.org/1187524/Worlds-hig ... -H-P-India
website: http://himachaltourism.gov.in/post/Chail.aspx

Chail’s cricket ground was built in 1893 after leveling out the top of a hill. At an altitude of 2444 meters, this is perhaps the highest cricket pitch in the world.

But it's certainly not the highest place where cricket is regularly played.

In comparison, this is not all that high, but this just looked just too enchantingly beautiful to miss out on:

The picture shows England Vs Sri Lanka, possibly 2004, "Cricinfo: One of the venues for the Champions Trophy in 2004, The Rose Bowl received widespread criticism when access to the ground for England's key fixture against Sri Lanka proved extremely difficult, as 16,000 spectators descended" but maybe not .....

FTS: I've really missed going to the MCG since I've lived here in sunny England. Lord's and the Oval are both pretty special. :rasta I'm looking forward to seeing a bit of cricket down at the Roseball next summer! :thumb

Keepashes: I' m not sure if this is the right one, but it's definitely a cricket ground in Hampshire anyway, with that telltale row of striped pitches in the middle. I can't resist quoting the slightly over-the-top claims for its current redevelopment, from their website: "Rose Bowl plc has today announced that work will begin on the first element of its £48million redevelopment project which will transform the venue into one of the best Test Match grounds in world cricket. The first element of the project involves the construction of 2 major new stands, either side of the existing Pavilion with work set to begin immediately. The stands which are due for completion in time for the start of the 2010 cricket season next April, will provide covered seating for a further 4,800 spectators. These additional seats will take the Rose Bowl’s permanent capacity to 15,000 and with the addition of semi-permanent seating for Major Matches its maximum capacity to 25,000 – the largest public ticket offering amongst the UK grounds." Upcoming Internationals: 1st ODI: England v Australia at Southampton Jun 22 2010 (14:30 local, 13:30 GMT), 5th ODI: England v Pakistan at Southampton Sep 22 2010 (14:30 local, 13:30 GMT)

Chail is amazing, Borges. So I've done this additional link http://wikimapia.org/#lat=30.9628857&lo ... =0&m=s&v=9 for anyone who has trouble (as I do) exiting the text window to see the map.

It's not really fair, however, because if India had stayed in Gondwanaland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gondwanaland where it belonged, instead of racing off to the tropics so fast that it overshot and crashed into Asia and created the Himalayas, we might be able to compete, but as it is we'd have to build one on 217 metre stilts on top of Mt Kosciuszko (2,228 m) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Kosciuszko. see also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tadeusz_Ko ... Yes, the earlier wikimapia entry for Chail Cricket Ground was quite unsatisfactory. Thanks a bunch, Ashes. I still haven't had the time to learn how to edit wikimapia - intend to do so pretty soon.

I had a rough time hunting for a few good pictures of the ground. Chail is a really beautiful place - a pity that the cricket ground is not promoted more aggressively as a tourist attraction. The pitch looked good when I was there last (several years ago), but I think it has been neglected in the recent past. Perhaps the state cricket association should hold a few FC matches there every year.

Mt Kosciuszko Cricket Ground could be a lot easier to build than Chail; the top of the mount looks flat enough!

I was going to see your beach and raise you a Lara "Where the bloody hell are you?" Bingley, Mike, but instead you can have the 2009 Qantas commercial. Mountains we don't do, but beaches ? No worries.

I've found that a Google "Image" search is usually pretty good. There's heaps on Chail, eg http://images.google.com.au/images?hl=e ... 40&ndsp=20

Two of those images were via google image search - lots on Chail, but very few good ones of the cricket ground. Many were, funnily enough, of people posing in front of a board outside the ground (which proclaimed it as the worlds highest) - personal photographs by tourists, I suppose.

With those ones with the text box windowed with the map (which never appear when I use Wikimapia, incidentally), what you have to do is clik the little red "wikimapia" link on the top right hand corner of the map section (or maybe double-click) and then it reverts to the map and you can zoom in. Another trick is to choose the "wikimapia with old places" version from the "Map Type" tag, because they've cleared out a lot of the haphazard tags in the new one, but there's a lot less detail. Also, the "Google hybrid" map type is often useful, snce it overlays a roadmap on the satellite image. Lastly, if there's a wikipedia entry they usually have "Location" next to them these days, and that offers you all the mapping under the sun, one of whIch is "wikimapia with old places". None of which has helped me find the old Shanghai Cricket Ground just yet, but I'm working on it. Trying to get some background ready for the China - Afghanistan match, see.

Keepashes: Sorry this one is a bit longer than usual, but I wanted to record the picture and story of the Don signing a kid's bat at Manuka to celebrate him entering (belatedly) the ICC Hall of Fame. The image and text comes from the "Faces of Australia" photo wall at the National Archives of Australia http://www.naa.gov.au/whats-on/online/faces/index.aspx , and if you want to find out what happened to the kid and the bat you'll have to go look for yourself. It's the image towards the bottom right corner, and the story is worth the effort. [Technical note: It's a Flashplayer display so I had to print screen (ctrl-Prt Sc) and then fire up MS paint and edit it and shrink it 50%, save it as a JPEG, and finally upload. Bit of a chore.] The photo is probably 6th February 1963 when Bradman played. See the teams here http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/PhotoSe ... 45686&SE=1 and the toss here Image and the match scorecard here http://static.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1 ... B1963.html . The Don was bowled for 4 by JB (Brian) Statham http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/20341.html . Australia was declared polio-free in 2000, and the last "wild" polio case was in 1972, by the way http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12206379 . I had a half-brother who died of the late effects of polio in 1955. It's not QUITE eradicated world-wide yet, unfortunately. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poliomyelitis_eradication

This is a fun thread. I have tried to find pictures of our grounds but the grounds are too little and/or poxy.
