Brilliant day, brilliant game.

I am though utterly astounded that we got as much play as we did. It poured it down in Chilworth between 11 and 12, and was constantly on and off between about 12.30 and 2.30. Weather gods on our side. Cricket gods too?...

Weather and umpires were with us, we got five lbws out of the eight wickets to fall today!

The Clarke one looked fifty fifty, the rest seemed pretty fair.

Still makes a nice change.

Not a great performance from our B team so far against South Africa's A team.

To be fair, we've gone into the game with about three batsmen and 100 bowlers. Against guys who are presumably not too far away from the SA test team.

Good to see Surrey-Essex is playing out as a high scoring draw so far. Both will close right up on us if it continues that way, but neither will overtake us. Yorkshire though will just jump above us with a win at Taunton.

So much for Surrey-Essex heading to a boring draw. Surrey six down now, and looks like there will be a result tomorrow.

The bottom three meanwhile are at risk of being cut adrift (and amazingly that does include the Champions), if Lancs and Yorks can both press home their current advantages.

.

True, but still a serious drubbing.

SA were 18/2 off 13 overs after day one as well!

Although Crane has been called into the England t20 squad, I would imagine that there is still a chance that he'll be available for the day-night four day game at home to Somerset. The final t20 is on 25 June, and the Somerset match starts on 26 June. If Crane finds himself just carrying the drinks (particularly during the second two matches; the fact that the first t20 is at the Rose Bowl might aid Crane's case in that one), then you would think that the ECB will make him available.

Dawson is probably a different story though. I'd imagine that he'll play all three t20s, and thus almost certainly will miss the Somerset game. Somerset meanwhile may well be without Craig Overton.

As for today, I'm not really sure what my feelings are.

Yes Essex won, but they defeated Surrey. And can Essex keep this excellent form going all season, especially once they lose Cook (and Wagner)? No doubt though that Porter has been brilliant.

Yes Yorkshire won, but you would expect them to beat Somerset. And the glass-half-empty view is that Somerset losing does push us closer to safety.

And yes Lancs won, but in doing so they kept Middlesex at arms length from us. And whilst they did win this one, I have to say that Lancs don't scare me without Jimmy. If we're fit and firing next week, and the pitch isn't a flat pancake, then I'd back us to beat them.

Brendy we get Amir, when Wagner goes so we lose nothing there...Yes Cook will be a loss, but he isn't as proflic as he was at the start of the season..also Browne and Westley are coming into form and Tendo is having a cracking season

At the moment you have got Amir. But all too regularly overseas players who are signed months in advance, end up having to pull out for one reason or another. I wouldn't be putting any plans in place until he pulls on the shirt for the first time.

Look, I hope he does turn up for you. I would just be cautious.

Im always cautious when it comes to Essex, but if we don't have an overseas we can still feel the gaps, i think we will be fine, infact more than fine, see how we go

Looking at the 13 man squad for Monday, I would suggest that nine men pick themselves. And then it is two from Taylor, Wheal, Salisbury and Holland. Taylor is an almost certain pick, given that we would have no spinner otherwise.

In saying that, the top three hasn't been exactly pulling up trees in recent times.

Another fourth wicket record?!
