I suspect no wides was down to a sympathetic and generous umpire who thought the debutant was suffering enough. I remember the visit the launderette tale but thought it was by Tim Rich although in those days several journalists could have had that experience at different times.

True. Whoever it was should have known better! A collapse was almost invitable in those days - and often still is now.
