Seems as if Hampshire are finding form in the championship.

With the bat at least. But hey, step by step.

That said, it's not a huge surprise. In recent years, and in particular last year, we've always done much better in the second half of the season that in the first half. It's as if the calendar ticking over to 1 July awakens the team!

Whether it will be enough to keep us up this season, who knows. I think we've really got to rely on playing on wickets which suit Crane, but even then it's a lot for a teenager to take on. The batters finding form sadly doesn't bring Fidel or Topley or Wood back from injury. And I wouldn't be surprised if McLaren's hamstring injury is more serious than the club are letting on. I'm pleased to see young Wheal given a chance in this match ahead of Best, but in all honestly he looked badly out of his depth when he was first introduced last season. We'll see tomorrow whether a winter away, and just another year of being a professional, has developed him at all.

A few years back - I can't remember exactly when, but it was inbetween his two (very short, and very wide apart) England stints - the medics discovered blood clots on his lung. It was just before the squad were due to fly out to WI for pre-season training. Apparently if he'd got on the plane, he could have died, so they really did find the blood clots just in time (the medics weren't looking for anything specific, just usual pre-season checks I understand). I think he missed the whole of that season, and the start of the following season. One of his first innings back was his 300 vs Yorkshire, when him and McKenzie put on the record 500+ partnership

I'll try and keep a bit closer eye on the game today as other events going on yesterday made me forget we were starting a four day game.

Hope Carberry is okay, the breathless reports could be connected to his previous life threatening illness.

Sean Ervine 10,000 first class runs.

Wheater currently 23 away from 5000 having played exactly half (give or take 0.5) the number of matches!

From 522 runs for 5 wickets it's gone to the next 7 wickets for 20 ! Good for Hampshire surely, if the weather holds?

We look like gaining no further bonus points today, so we'll have to stick with 10.

We might stand a chance with the spinners on and Warwickshire going for maximum batting points in the next seven overs.

And Warwickshire lose a couple of wickets just in time to give us a second bowling point. Could be crucial at the end of the season.

As could that successful Middlesex run chase. We've really closed the gap on Somerset as a result.

It's almost certainly two from us, Surrey, Notts and Somerset. And importantly, four of our last seven games are against those sides - starting this Sunday.

Gavin Griffiths will almost certainly make his debut for us tonight, on loan from Lancs. Even though it's a t20 (and a meaningless one at that), you'd hope he sees it as an opportunity to impress the club. The more decent young bowlers we can find, the better for us going forward. It's the one thing we just don't seem to be able to produce ourselves.

Carberry diagnosed with a cancer, what terrible news. Let's hope is treatable.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

When I saw the words "club statement" next to his photo, I knew it wasn't good. I'd braced myself to read he was retiring due to his health. I hadn't braced myself to read cancer.

Such sad news. Hopefully he recovers, even if it's not to play cricket again.

Yes puts form and results in perspective. Best to remember that the C word is not as terrifying as it once was particularly when there's early diagnosis.
