He would have had a medical with Sussex before they signed him, who would have access to his medical records.

I'd guess that many bowlers have conditions that could escalate into a series threatening injury, or might not be a problem immediately, or ever. Its possible Sussex took him on those terms. And presumably Sussex insure their players against injury. I don't know, these are just suggestions.

The condition was found to be congenital, so it always existed and had flared up preventing him from playing the season before. Essex had apparently concluded that his back pains were caused by a virus or infection in the spine, and had also concluded that the problem had healed. Before that he had apparently been tested for a range of different diseases that could of caused it, as he complained that everytime he went to bowl he got a feeling like he was being electrocuted. Essex also concluded that the problem was not caused, nor made worse, by bowling or his bodily mechanics.

He goes to Sussex and plays one game, he feels the pain, they do a quick study and find his spine is too narrow.... that far from being healed, it is a problem that cannot be healed. That bowling risks basically disabling him, and that he risks his health by continuing in his career. And that this problem was a birth defect that was always there.

Way to go Essex's medical team!!! It wasnt an issue that escalated, it was an issue that one medical team took a few days to make a proper and conclusive diagnosis, and the other took years of misdiagnosis that risked the heal of the player. I fail to see how this is an accident though, I have a suspicion that someone at Essex was doing the lad a favour.

But as I say, he would have had a medical at Sussex, who would have had his records. Surely it's not like selling a house and hoping the viewer doesn't notice a painted over damp spot in the bathroom.

As stated, the Essex medical team believed he had a problem that had healed, and had misdiagnosed him. So those records weren't worth anything, they were wrong.

I believe in football, medicals dont last longer than 4 hours. It certainly wouldnt be standard practice (or anywhere near) to start taking scans of his spine and having medical assessments made in that depth. He probably was asked to do some stretches, run on a treadmill, that kind of thing. Not sure you can expect a signing team to subject a player yet to sign a contract to month long medical assessments.

They have to trust the medical opinion supplied, but in this instance it wasnt worth anything.

And while they might be insured, insurance didnt really help when all available players are signed to clubs and your season is midway and already ruined. A direct result of Mills joining was Jon Lewis leaving, a player we really could have done with last season.

I suppose apart from to Mills, who the injury has robbed of a career, Sussex most missed out in having their plans disrupted. Perhaps it could be argued that Mills represented an investment and not an immediate windfall; his record at Essex was barely average, though his pace was promising. If Sussex intended to rely heavily on a player that his former club had used sparingly, maybe that was optimistic. Sussex were unfortunate in that a lot of players went down at once. I know we are only isolating Mills because Westoelad made a point about him, but seen in isolation, maybe Sussex (who seem to have a lot of seamers, if few have good fitness records) did actually allow for Mills not playing many games, in their planning?

Piolet is no shock, but thought Liddo and Zaidi still had use as squad players

We probably can't afford him.

He'd be better value for money than Macleod.
