Just three overs into the new season.

Hoping it may be just a case of early season stiffness.

this will be a test of Compo's captaincy, having to rotate his 3 remaining bowlers between now and the close. Perhaps Steeley will give him some sound advice....... "I'd think about getting rid of the slips, Compo"

Also be a test of Riley's ability to bowl containing offspin, while the 2 remaining seamers alternate at the other end. If Lyth starts to work Riley around, things could get problematic.

Bairstow is someone who could have been left out without any damage done to the England squad. But would it be fair on Bairstow to leave him out? For another player to be established ahead of him. Bairstow wants international cricket.

If it were a Lions tour there'd be some justification for complaint but it would blatantly unfair to bar a player of a full cap using such criteria. It will affect Yorkshire for 3 games, 2 of which they'll also be deprived of their captain for his lack of self-control. Would it be worthwhile of Yorkshire to submit a plea that Gale' s suspension be deferred until the end of the W.Indies tour?

But what use is Bairstow being selected for England duty, primilarily as cover and not get a game? Just like the time when he was in the ICC Champions Trophy squad. If the ECB need a keeper as back up, then call up a youngster who would be glad of the experience. It doesn't mean Bairstow will be down the pecking order.

With Younus Khan not available in April due to international commitments, Yorkshire now have eight players unavailable for the season opener against Worcestershire. Any further players unavailable to injury/illness/personal reasons and the fixture is thrown in doubt.

Not true AP. Root and Ballance aren't Yorkshire players-they're centrally contracted, Younis Khan wasn'y contracted for early season and Gale made himself unavailable because of his own indiscipline. You'll have the bowling attack available that's just dismissed a strong MCC batting line up for little over 200 and have a plethora of promising young batsmen to call on who will be given an opportunity perhaps they wouldn't have otherwise had.

Are you referring to Ajmal? ;)
He will play for Worcestershire this season but his early season availability depends on whether or not he is on international duty.

Yorkshire managed without Root and Ballance last year, owing to Bairstow playing regular County Cricket and having an overseas batsmen for the entire campaign.

Gale got stitched up by the ECB who wanted to flex their muscles and punished twice for the same offence.

Younus was signed as early season cover before Pakistan and Bangladesh rescheduled an outstanding tour for April two days ago.

Yorkshire don't have a plethora of promising young batsmen ready for first team action. Wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd is likely to play as a makeshift opener, all rounder Richard Pyrah is likely to play as a specialist batsman.

Probable squad against Worcestershire

Lees, Hodd, Leaning, Tattersall, Pyrah, Rhodes, Bresnan, Sidebottom, Brooks, Patterson, Carver (spinner). 4 batsmen, 3 all rounders and 4 tailenders. It will be a miracle if Yorkshire can somehow get a win in the 1st 3 games.
