Odd that England didn't know not to pick him in their WC30.

I don't think he himself realised until very recently that he wouldn't be available. It appears that he was hoping that his vision would improve over time and this hasn't happened. He's now decided to take time out to reappraise his situation.

Notts have signed Philander and Hilfenhaus to share the overseas spot.

They'll be hoping to get more out of them than they did Siddle. Vern has some goodwill to make up after his last turn in CC.

Alviro Petersen has retired from international cricket " and will take up a Kolpak deal in English county cricket"

A replacement for Nick Compton at Somerset? No doubt Surrey will also be interested-even if he is only 34-especially if Sanga delays his international retirement.

Highly likely, he's played there before and would seem ideal replacement for Compo.

There are a couple of posts on Twitter suggesting Petersen and Matthew Maynard had a fallout at Glamorgan so perhaps that might be a stumbling block now that Maynard is at Somerset.

Petersen would at least be a step in the right direction, but he's not a top quality signing. In his previous stints he's been a good addition to the side, but he's not someone who is going to be the rock of a batting line up.
