It should be said that Abbott's third over was very good. One of only two or three overs of ours that didn't go for a boundary.

He just needed to do that for the full four overs, rather than just one.

I did feel sorry for him though not being able to get any early rhythm going, with his 1st, 2nd and 3rd overs all quite some distance apart from each other.

Hampshire squad v @leicsccc: Adams (c), Abbott, Alsop, Bates, Balcombe, Briggs, Coles, Ervine, Gatting, Smith, Tomlinson, Vince, Wheater

Dawson out as expected, odd that Alsop is ahead of McManus in the pecking order

My mate told me yesterday to expect Alsop ahead of McManus. He's very good mates with Wood, Dawson and Bates (having played cricket with them for years), and more recently has played against the McManus' and the Hose's, and he's heard a lot from within the club that they rate Alsop higher than McManus.

Whilst I'm on the subject, he doesn't rate Barber at all. All pace, no accuracy and no brain. But the kid is still young.

isn't alsop a wk ? Meaning we have 3 in a 13 man squad.

Mcmanus sounds like the new benny howell, took his chance but won't get another, once terry is fit he will be even further behind.

McManus should have got the nod in this game. Took his opportunity in albeit a lower standard game but he's clearly got a bit about him and is in form. Stuff pecking orders and who your mates with. Hopefully Alsop doesn't double up as a keeper in the footy season.

In fact if they are so keen to play him drop the walking wicket and have them both in.

I have a feeling that Briggs will play, now Dawsons spin is gone, unless we use Smith more.

Alsop is a WK yes. But so is McManus. Not sure it really matters if you have one WK or six WKs in your squad, so long as they're good enough to get in on batting alone.

Wheater would appear a certainty to start tomorrow. Toss up between Alsop and Briggs for the other spot. Ordinarily I'd have gone Briggs, but that would mean Bates and Gatting in our top seven.

God knows who will open with Jimmy (if Alsop doesn't start - if he does, I'd expect us to just throw him out there to avoid too much distruption). Smith?

Smith used to open, so would be an obvious choice, maybe try Gatting at the top, he can't do much worse.

I think Gatting started as an opener.

I've just checked out exactly when the Eng-SL fixtures are, and to my pleasant surprise the first two ODIs are Thursday and Sunday. I'd assumed one would have been on either Friday or Saturday.

In that case then, if Carberry isn't selected to play on Thursday, then I see no reason why he wouldn't be released to play for us on Friday. That's been one thing the England team have often been quite good at, allowing reserve players to return to their counties mid-series, where possible.

It looks like Hants are collecting wickies! We may as well get Rouse back & I seem to recall Crawley has played behind the stumps as well!

It's as bad as Bournemouth who recently had 6 (six) goalies on their books!

Hence my reference to Alsop!

On the subject of Bournemouth keepers did you see David James decared himself bankrupt yesterday, a divorce, bad financial advice, buying property at the wrong time and overspending probably contributing factors.

No I hadn't seen that - I thought he was well minted! I last heard of him playing in Iceland & owning a luxury pad in Devon! Jalal & Henderson have left the building but I believe B'mth still have Camp, Alsop (liked the joke!), Buchel & Flahaven. Moss is the goalie coach - we just need Gareth Stewart (who once (still?) lived next door to Steve Fletcher) to turn up with his goalie gloves looking for a game!

If Alsop does start tomorrow, whilst it will technically be his debut, it will not be the first time he has pulled on a Hampshire shirt.

As you may recall, in a one day at home last season (possibly the Derbyshire home game), Wheater got injured before the game and Bates was away with the seconds. So although we did replace Wheater with Bates in our XI, because Bates had about two hours-ish of travelling to get the ground, Alsop kept wicket for our first 20-ish overs. And took a couple of catches (including one standing up to Dimi).

Indeed, for that reason, you could argue that Alsop hasn't overtaken McManus. You could say he was already ahead of McManus.
