I wonder how the conditions could have deteriorated during play. It sounds as if the umpires blundered in declaring it fit for play in the first place, the delay must be because they're waiting for it to dry out.

Play abandoned for the day.
Apparently the umpires were inspecting the bowler's run up area. Took them a long time to decide it was unsafe.Had problem with drainage since thenew stand was built whih apparently interfered with the old drainage.

lets hope that the ECB forget that any safety problems in a Roses match requires a fine and a points deduction for Durham to resolve them

Ah right. Sounds very unfortunate rather than a blunder. Probably just as well both teams are through to division 1.

The fact that the game was abandoned today without any further rain suggests there's a major probem with drainage at Headingley. Gale has admitted as much. There's a IT 20 scheduled for Sunday and more worringly a sold out test match within the next month both before this issue can be solved.
Until there is absolute prove that the issue has been resolved the venue should be removed from the international schedule.

except that it won't

The club has a lot of influence at the top

you'd be more likely to see the Very Silly cancelled than a test match taken away from Yorks

It was a tongue in cheek comment - valid nevertheless.

It did rain quite heavily on Sunday night - and much of Monday in the Leeds area.

Excess water has been a historical problem area around the Football Stand/Old Pavilion end, before the drainage system was upgraded. Though the white elephant of a new stand won't help as it blocks out a fair chunk of sunlight. The pitch was meant to be relaid at the end of last season, but the club cited work could not be done due to covid.

Wouldn't blame the ECB if any of the Headingley internationals got moved. It would spark a vote of no confidence to the board for sure.

what about home games for my team.... the Leeds Rhinos, Yorkshire county cricket club, the Northern battery chargers.... you know... the team I'm bound to want to follow just because it has the word Northern battery in the name?

any chance those matches get moved/abandoned, or will they just do a Durham and have 20 yard boundaries, so no-one can run on that part of the ground?

Some very low scores this round - at least half the games have the side batting first all out on day 1 then the side batting second overtaking them.

150 not out for Stoneman won't go down well in places.

Yorks looking like they might come close v Somerset after failing to win with Hants nine down in the last game.

I'd forgotten the Middlesex game started a day late. He has redeemed himself after the disastrous debut!

About 50-50 I think. Still four wickets in hand.
