My worry is that if this Essex innings goes on much longer, these umpires may use the funeral break as an excuse to keep us out there batting in the dark at 8pm.

Borthwick did confirm to Marty E that he didn't see anything of the ball that got him out in the first innings...... just couldn't see it.... a combination of the poor light, Lawrence's height that the ball was delivered from and some trees at the other end of the ground

well I was too nervous to look, which it is why it's taken me until 7.35 to check in

although with these umpires they probably only called time 10 mins ago

9 for Borthwick off 88 balls in over 2 hours at the crease. Certainly can't accuse him of being reckless.

Also agreed.... these small targets and the difficulties in chasing them down are what FC cricket is all about. Making things so difficult is what defines champion counties, so Essex are showing why they are as good as they are. They might even win yet... shhhhhh.................

One of the comments from the 2 Essex commentators yesterday was that players in this match who've taken the bowing on have tended to do much better than those that have sat back and tried to hang on. It was certainly a feature of SB's innings on Thursday and also the likes of Lawrence and Walter. The only player to be both productive and defensive was Allison today

Lets see.... if one of our batsmen can hold up an end that will definitely help, because Essex need us to get in a Thursday 'come on umpires what are you playing at' late evening tizzy, really... only earlier

Certainly will be interesting tomorrow and I agree that this has shown why the 4 day game with twists and turns galore is so compelling.
I think we are headed in the right direction regardless of the result and there are plenty of positive signs- that said I also think it will be a poor defeat if that's what happens. They were effectively 1 for 5 yesterday afternoon.
