Yorkshire's innings exposes the fallacy that it's essential to bat out your overs. Batting out a series of 0-3 runs an over hasn't brought any benefit, and they've got out batting cautiously anyway.

Not easy to score on a surface which offers assistance to the bowlers, Essex used the conditions effectively and took pace off the ball with great effect. Conceding just 1 wide and 3 leg byes goes to show how accurately Essex bowled. If anything Leaning, Rashid and Bresnan threw their wickets too early by trying to up the ante.

250 is just about defendable on this wicket, but Yorkshire's bowlers have got to be right on the money.

Much needed wicket by Plunkett, Westley rode his luck a bit en-route to 50 with a couple of mis-timed aerial shots that would have been caught on a proper sized outfield rather than six.
