There's two days left. Not in a million years will we declare overnight.

I'd love to know how we can go off at 4:45ish for bad light with spinners on, and come back on at 6o'clockish with seamers on

The light got better, no doubt. It was very gloomy driving home from work through Soton/Chilworth at the time they went off.

As i said earlier get a 500+ lead then declare to give them about 10 overs before lunch with the new ball, then a second burst right after.

Yeah, I can't see us targeting a particular time or number of overs to declare at.

I imagine a Vince double century will be the target, regardless of when it comes. He needs another 46 runs for that, whilst we need another 71 for a 500 lead. Based on how Vince has been going, I could see the two being hit at roughly the same time. It just all depends on whether Vince gets out before 200.

Ideally you'd want a Smith 100 too, and if he's anywhere close to it, then we'd carry on for that too. And actually, if he starts off in a fairly positive mode, he'd get that before Vince gets his 200.

The one and only reason that I can see for maybe getting on with this tomorrow morning, and declaring as soon as possible with a 500 lead, is that it could open up the chance of us being able to take the third new ball right at the end of the final day, in the unlikely event that Essex do manage to hang on in there (180 overs less 96 day four overs = 84 overs. 96 day three overs less 84 overs less 2 overs for the change of innings = 10 overs. So batting for a maximum of 9 overs tomorrow would give us the opportunity, in the very unlikely even that we'd need it...but would we score 71 from 9 or less overs? I very much doubt it).

If we need 180 overs, we don't deserve to win.

Which is ultimately why the timing of the declaration is pretty irrelevant. Just so much time left. Better to just bat Essex out of the game, and then go out and win it.

Kyle Abbott mentioned having 4 and a half sessions at them.Whether thats his personal opinion when we will declare, or something being discussed is unclear. OR we could go over in a heap and be all out by lunch ( they were 2 down last night and all out by lunch ) and have the opportunity taken from our hands.

Still feel sorry for Balcombe.

That's a very good point about the second new ball. They do have the potential to bat a long time - I think Ravi got a big to against Kent a week or so back. My money is on 12.20 ish with Vince an Smith given licence to move it along. What a day today though!

Although a Hants win is the priority there's a chance for a lot of personal bests, targets, etc.
It must be rare for Hants to have had such a good day & to be in such a commanding position with 2 days (of decent weather as well) to go.
Vince double ton.
Vince first in country to 1000 FC wins & a place in Playfair & Wisden next year.
Smith 100.
Vince/Smith 300 partnership.

Hopefully at least some will be achieved?
