I was sitting in the trapdoor stand this afternoon. The seats are quite comfy compared to the rest
I thought our bowling was terrific today, especially given the difficulties we've had in recent times to take wickets. We were asking questions of the batters all the time. There were hardly any freebies on offer and Somerset were never allowed to settle or build. Constant probing in really good areas and helped by the occasional ball keeping low. Stokes was excellent, Siddle and Coggers were tidy and gave nothing away and Raine eventually got the extra couple of late wickets that his bowling deserved.
When Leach fell, I was trying to think who the last bat was and couldn't come up with a name, then the screen flashed up that Banton was unable to bat.
Comprehensive win in 5 sessions. That was probably helped by the deluge on Wednesday. I know nothing about pitch preparation, but there was a hint of green, so I'm guessing that the shocking weather in the preceding two days may have prevented a final cut of the pitch. Is that how it works? Forecast is dreadful tomorrow and poor on Monday, so just as well that we were able to polish them off in 30 odd overs or whatever it was. The wicket of Rew summed up our bowling, for me. He was trying to leave as much as he could and try to pick off the bad ball that almost never came. So Stokes bowled a 4th stump line, ball after ball, which Rew dutifully left, then got the final ball a fraction tighter, Rew realised too late that this maybe wasn't a leave and was maybe a bit low, jammed his bat down at the last moment and nicked off. He just wasn't given any release shots at all. Abell had been pinned in his crease by Raine and Siddle, so tried to get forward and instantly nicked off. These were all well worked wickets. Somerset just didn't know what to do to get through it until the bowlers got tired or the ball went completely soft. Coggers kept rapping Gregory and Overton on the pads over and over again and had they not got out when they did, it felt to me as though it was only a matter of time before eventually the finger went up. Did well today, Coggers
Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the ground, having left home 9 down, to find we were still batting.... amazing!
