Astonishingly bad timing ! Maxwell now in line to play as the allrounder .

This thread could set new records ...

I'll say it is. With Mitchell Marsh, who I'm a big fan of (which is pretty well documented by now), I still think he's a season away from being ready for Test cricket. He needs a bumper season in the Sheffield Shield under his belt before being elevated to the big time, and that hasn't happened yet. He's definitely shown glimpses of what he is capable of. He needs to be managed the right way (unlike other players I've been banging the can for over a period of time - Usman Khawaja springs to mind). Taking him on tour is one thing, but throwing him to the wolves when he isn't ready is another matter all together. Twatto will retire eventually, or will simply break apart and make a hell of a mess in the process.

As for Glenn Maxwell, I like him. Of course I like him, he's a Victorian - get him up here, I want to boof him! Long term, I see Maxwell competing with Mitchell Marsh for the number 6 slot in the Oz Test team. Maxwell, IMHO, is a special talent. His baptism of fire against India was unfortunate, and really he should have played in the dead rubber a couple of months earlier in Sydney against Sri Lanka. Should Maxwell play against Pakistan, I reckon he'll do great... unless he gets injured, of course. Should that happen, then it will be over to James Faulkner, I guess. And after him, it will be back to Moises Henriques... and after him, Dan Christian. Andrew McDonald could come into contention... if he wasn't injured. I'm too depressed to go any further.

And yes, at the rate that Oz cricketers break down, this thread could see quite a bit of traffic.

Sounds very bad I'm afraid...being reported here as "in a critical condition " in hospital.

Fingers crossed for him...

It seems these head injuries even when players are wearing helmets are becoming more common. Sounds pretty grim, hope he recovers.

I've just heard. I heard that the doctor in the scene had to perform mouth to mouth.

I am in a bit of a state of shock, but geez, what about his family and friends. I hope he recovers well.

It appears he was hit in an exposed spot on the back of his head just below the helmet.

He's out of surgery and in an induced coma.

Good luck to the guy, let's hope he makes a full and speedy recovery from this.

Feel for Abbott too, it must be horrible to be the one who bowled the ball, but that's cricket.

A dreadful injury. Astonishingly unlucky , with the helmet and all , but he seems to have been struck in about the worst possible spot.
Stopped breathing , fortunate they had good medical help at the ground to at least get him to hospital with a chance. But I am hearing we won't know how he's going to come out of this for some 24-48 hours. So he needs all our good wishes . And prayers , perhaps , from those who do.

Shocking news about Phil Hughes at the SCG. While facial injuries and broken bones are common in cricket, thankfully these very serious events are rare and come as a real shock, while emphasising the bravery involved in playing the game. It sounds like he had prompt medical help, and now he is being closely monitored we hope the worse danger has passed. Best wishes to Phil Hughes. Like all cricket followers, I'll listen closely for news, especially over the next 48 hours. And thanks to the input of the medics, surgeons and all the hospital staff.
I always say that everybody's right.
