Jason Gillespie..... now that was a doubler and a half

a real odd one

was it Banga? I can't remember. I guess he'll always be grateful to whichever batsman it was didn't fancy it, and sent him in as night watchman

yep, against the Bangas as a NW. I think he is the only NW to make a double. But is definitely the only batsman with a career average of less than 20 to score a double.

And he is the only test batsman in the history of the game to ride his bat, cowboy style, down the cricket pitch.

Cricinfo did an article about it after Ashton Agar's innings at trent bridge, and I believe only two proper nightwatchman (ie proper bowlers sent in, not a number 7 wicketkeeper with 7 test centuries) have scored a hundred, let alone a double.

Its a comparison that a lot of people made on commentary at the time. He played some booming drives that flew off the bat, perfectly executed. He didnt look like a tailender, he looked like a world class number 3 playing in tough conditions.

I found this assessment from the BBC article at the time......

With the poise of an opening batsman and a West Indian swagger not unlike the great Viv Richards, Tudor showed that his array of shots is vast. This was no lucky innings.

Sad news from across the ditch this morning, with the passing of Martin Crowe.

Yes, sorry to hear. I've been wondering about him since his articles stopped. A great player of his era, and of his country. Fifty three. A year my senior.
I always say that everybody's right.
