Hi folks

Now that the group stage is wrapping up and we have some time on our hands until the next meaningful game on Tuesday, I'd like to invite you to put thinking caps on for some World Cup board awards.

I'll throw some possible categories of award out for discussion, and we can bounce them around for a few days. Then I'll open nominations after the final has concluded, nominations will be open for a week, whereupon I can post the winners for your delectation (although I can't promise to make the awards ceremony as entertaining as AC does).

Proposed awards:
3 batsmen of the tournament
3 bowlers of the tournament
All-rounder of the tournament
Wicket-keeper of the tournament
Captain of the tournament
Emerging star of the tournament
Batting performance of the tournament
Bowling performance of the tournament
Match of the tournament
Biggest (positive) surprise of the tournament (team)
Biggest (positive) surprise of the tournament (player)
Biggest letdown of the tournament (team)
Biggest letdown of the tournament (player)
Champagne moment of the tournament
Overall player of the tournament

Hopefully those are mostly self-explanatory, but a few notes on a couple:

Emerging star is a bit subjective. It's intended to be: which player has made the biggest name for themselves in this tournament, relative to their standing in their team prior - likely to be a young or new player, but it could be someone who has been around for a while, never achieved much until now, but had a great tournament.

Positive surprises and letdowns are intended to be awarded to specific players and teams rather than specific incidents - so England losing to Sri Lanka is not a valid team letdown nomination, but the England team could be the winner of that category. Those categories are intended to be for the individual players and teams that most exceeded and most fell short of pre-tournament expectations.

I haven't put out team of the tournament, as it's going to be very unusual for that not to be self-evidently the winner of the final, but I'll include it if there is demand. Likewise, I haven't put in a tournament XI, as you end up having more arguments about the balance of the side rather than who the best players of the tournament were, so I've left it with the awards for top players in each category.

Anyway, those are just my suggestions for categories. The floor is open.

Sounds to me as though this is probably very offensive to people who can't read, don't watch cricket, haven't got Sky Sports, live on the other side of the world, or can't afford to pay £125 a ticket to watch any live matches, and risks universal outrage over its dangerous and irresponsible lack of inclusivity, by people who love be outraged........ and lets be honest....who doesn't?

But at the risk of alienating millions of people on social twaddle..... I'm in!

I haven't seen a single match, so I'm out. From the outside, biggest let down (team) has to be the Windies. A definite dark horse, who started strongly but faded. The saffers do run them close but I didn't have high hopes for them.

When did not seeing matches rule anyone out from having an opinion? ;)

I've only seen about 4 due to time differences and refusing to give Murdoch money, but I've been keeping up through TMS, highlights reels and live text commentary, for the most part...

Good idea BFL.

I've only been watching odd matches on my Mobile. Highlights viewing has helped, but they rarely show the mistakes.

How about a 'team of the tournament' comprising of one player from each country, plus a wildcard from any of the ten?

My back of an envelope XI:

Rohit Ind
Perera K. SL
Root Eng
Azam Pak
Shakib Ban
Pooran WI
Neesham NZ
Nabi Afg
Starc Aus
Bumrah WC
Tahir SA

Captain of the tournament Aaron Finch for having to deal with bad boy D and bad boy S and assimilate them into a winning side
Emerging star of the tournament Jofra Archer
Batting performance of the tournament Carlos Brathwaite, who so nearly did it against NZ
Bowling performance of the tournament Lasith Malinga for rolling back the years against England

Biggest (positive) surprise of the tournament (team) Sri Lanka
Biggest (positive) surprise of the tournament (player) Lockie Ferguson
Biggest letdown of the tournament (team) West Indies
Biggest letdown of the tournament (player) Martin Guptil could have been Gayle or Russell

is it?

I didn't read it that way, I thought it was for the days between now and the KO's

Not likely to change much, and easily amended

maybe batting/bowling performance and champagne moment

besides I'll be away for a few days next week, so I won't get to see anything of the KO's.......might as well get them in now
