Tim Paine has settled any arguments about his place in the team by announcing "time off from all cricket" : pressure did him in . Not unexpected.

Cummins as skipper with Smith as Number Two. At least he gets a clean start.

Presume Carey will take the gloves , although he is rather short of runs lately.

Surely that's Paine done now unless his understudy does terribly.

He saved CA the trouble of having to make a difficult decision twice in a week now.

A sad end (probably) to his career. His "crime" certainly did not deserve this, imo. CA has (again) shown that a lack of care for people is perfectly fine. I think they have done their brand damage, in an effort to protect their brand.

Good on Cricket Tasmania for sticking up for Paine, and giving it to CA.

Mitchell Marsh in the T20 form of his life. After his sword Cup final heroics he scored a stunning hundred for Perth today in the BBL.

And 86 today.

He averaged 21.6 in the five innings before that world cup knock and 60 in the five after it. Confidence breeds confidence.

how are the batting bonus points awarded in the BBL?

I haven't noticed subs being used much lately. Is that for a lack of players or because teams don't feel the need to use them?

The team chasing can get a bonus if they are over the NRR at the halfway stage, and I think the fielding team gets the bonus point if they are not.

As for subs, I think they have to be done by the 10th over of the first innings..... so unless you plan to bowl out someone straight away and sub a batter in, its unlikey youd use them

Not being an authority on either point won't stop me giving my opinion on how it works:

I don't think it is the NRR at the end of the 10th over, but where the other team were with their batting at the same time. I say this as I saw a match last week where one team got close on 200, but the bonus point score for the next team was only in the low 70's, as the first team were fairly slow but finished with a real flurry.

The sub rule is also the 10th over cutoff point (I think). A bowler can only be replaced if he has bowled no more that 1 over. If someone hasn't batted, they can be replaced.

Being reported Langer has resigned in disgust after CA offered him a six month extension to his deal.

there has been a MASSIVE amount of hooha over it is Aus, with Pat Cummins copping some incredible amounts of vitriol in the media, and in comments on social media.

Cummins was on a hiding to nothing, imo, when interviewed on tellie the week previous - when pressed to back Langer, he dodged the question, saying that was CA's decision to make, not his.

The biggest criticism that has come his way has to be taken with large grains of salt - Matthew Hayden was teary in his interview, but anyone who remembers their partnerships will remember the bromance these two have/had, and Mitchell Johnson was using the more damning words (a fair bit like most of Mitch1's bowling career - balls going in every which direction, but going fast and furious). Every single ex-player who has been highly critical is an ex-colleague and teammate of Langer.

While some people have come out in support of Cummins, absolutely no-one has spoken in support of Cricket Australia's part in this fiasco. It seems to me that they had decided 8 or so months ago that they were not going to renew Langer's contract - that decision itself is not so crazy, and can easily be argued for - but stringing Langer along with no effective communication, despite intense questioning about it all in the media for the past 12 or so months is much, much harder to justify.

There is no doubt though that Golden Boy Pat has lost a lot of his lustre in the public's eye. It will make each and every slip up scrutinised so much more closely from now on.

well, Langer seems to have been a devisive character all the way through his tenure despite it all coming together for Australia right at the end. Were CA hoping that a 6 month contract would see him through to the world cup and make it easier to get rid of him if Australia didn't win that too, or were they hoping he'd turn it down so that they didn't have to sack a coach who'd just comprehensively won the ashes and delivered a global trophy within a few weeks of each other?

I have no doubt that Langer would have expected a contract extension to last at least until the end of 2023, giving him the chance to defend the T20 WC, win the first overseas ashes tour for 22 years and have a bash at winning the 50 over WC.
