Charlotte Edwards retires

Sounds like a bit of an acrimonious breakup, with overtones of the KP saga - a top scoring batter who is being removed against their will because management feels it is time for 'the team to move on in another direction'. As the top scorer in the recent world T20, it seems odd that Edwards would not be kept until the Women's world cup next year at least as a batter, if not captain.

Nonetheless, time to reflect on a brilliant career in which she has captained England more times than any other person, male or female, a superb record with the bat and as captain, won almost everything going including multiple Ashes, a World Cup and a World T20, the first women recognised as a Wisden cricketer of the year, and a fine ambassador for women's cricket in England. No-one can have done more to raise the profile of the sport.

Goodbye Charlotte and thanks for the memories.

Giving mixed messages. Sometimes she retired, others she has been dropped. Many are saying she's been unfit, and that has been the problem. Pretty remarkable to play from 16-36, much of that time as an amateur. Shows great dedication.

Second highest run scorer in the women's world T20, and England's highest by quite some distance, at a pretty solid strike rate too - she can't be that unfit.

I think it's because she can't run or field so that's costing the team quite a few runs. Still a strange decision to axe her all together.

She could be the next former England captain heading for the Sky commentary team.

Reckon she'd be good. I was fortunate enough to have the pleasure of her company for a day at the Melbourne Ashes Test a few years ago ; and apart from being a nice lass she knew her cricket very well even then in the early days of her career. And it has been a great career :salute - replacing her won't be easy.

I was sorry to see she apparently felt a bit "pushed" at the end - had expected her to step down from the captaincy , but thought she would continue playing. Her fielding mobility isn't what it was ; but she was still clearly worth a place as a batter. Hope this decision to renovate the team from the top doesn't prove counterproductive...

Journalist already turning on him for sacking Edwards and with England women not exactly a strong team, would rank them close to India, WI, NZ on paper really.

Really harsh sacking her before the home world cup especially when she is by far the best player in the team still.

Tremendous performances all series from Tammy Beaumont and Lauren Winfield. 801 combined runs in a series is not the sniffed at. Lot of the nay Sayers need to eat humble pie.
