A very fine all-round cricketer if not quite top test level . Nevertheless extremely knowledgeable and astute cricketer who certainly should have been utilised as a spin bowling consultant for England. Never going to happen-far too forthright and outspoken to get an appointmnt by ECB. He was probably the last English expert on the spin bowling arts. Need to go to the subcontinent to find one now.

One of my favourite Ray Illingworth stories is where he told David Gower to smarten up when arriving to Leicestershire training, only for Gower to turn up the next day in DJ and bow tie.

Decent rather than brilliant player ; very good strong skipper ; probably bit too overbearing as a manager. Don't think he would have though much of today's efforts...

Certainly a Yorkshire great . RIP Ray.
