I am not one for going back decades to find fault in things that modern culture would not tolerate, and in this specific example, I am not even sure you would get much of a consensus on what "right" is between various advocates of different classes of people - nevertheless, I think Humphries volunteered to involve himself in a debate where his views were undoubtably offensive, and at that point, his career history becomes relevant. I find it difficult to understand someone who cross-dressed for most of their professional career, feeling the need to insult or offend people who also want to change their gender identity or play with the boundaries of gender expression. His position and career gave him a platform in the debate to have maybe had a positive influence - he instead, chose to use that platform to offend people ... his legacy has to bare that stain.
