Thanks Sussex. I still keep a watching brief on you lot - always interesting reading. Nowadays my meagre contribution is likely to be on this or the health thread - probably sums things up. Best wishes to one and all.

He leaves a conflicted legacy behind, because while his achievements in his time in office were mammoth in their scope, they have largely dismantled. He leaves behind a Russia going full speed in reverse, with a failing democracy and possibly even more isolated on an international level than they were in 1946. I guess you cant blame him that Putin tore down everything he put in place, but I guess you can for maybe not making it more robust, or dealing with root causes...

But how much can one man do in one go at it? All things taken into account, he had a pretty good go at it.

Jean-Luc Godard also at 91. Not a director whose films I enjoy, but acknowledge his uncompromising intellectualism. Among the highest critically rated film makers ever.

Angela Lansbury, at 96. Memorable in Gaslight and State of the Union. Sensational in Picture of Dorian Grey. Legendary in Manchurian Candidate. One of the great film character actors.

Death on the Nile is getting a lot of mentions, but it's a long time since I've seen it.

Even longer since I saw Bedknobs and Broomsticks though.

Saw that, and every obit led with 'Harry Potter actor...'. He was the voice of the sorting hat - a cameo (about 2 minutes per appearance) in three of the eight films. An entire career of stage, screen and radio (did the Navy Lark for 15 years, I think), over 40 films, including BAFTA nominated roles, and the press reckons his most notable achievement was a cameo in sodding Harry Potter.

Sigh.

has ever been thus

Eric Sykes was a harry potter actor when he died, despite a body of work spanning about 60 years.

I had a rant about this a few years ago. Nothing changes
