Rebuilding for the next World Cup.

It's obvious we haven't got a cat-in-hell's chance of winning this one so we need to start thinking about the next one already. For as long as I can remember England have always been "rebuilding for the next world cup" and every time it comes around we don't do any better than the last one.

We need to tell a few players they wont be needed - Bell, Anderson and Broad won't be effective at the next WC so they should not be considered for the next ODI series.

It would also be advantageous if Moores was gone.

We need to be looking at a nucleus of 20 upcoming players besides the regular squad and stick with them. I would include the following players -

Sam Billings
Sam Northeast
Mark Stoneman
Varun Chopra
Ben Stokes
Keith Barker
Chris Wright
Chris Rushworth

Players like Gary Ballance may still have a role but not at number 3. James Taylor could be worth trying at 3 with Ballance dropping down. Buttler may be worth moving up the order. No point having a big hitter like him come in with only a few overs left.

Captain Morgan? Well he certainly shouldn't be captain.

After the world cup i would start again, with this side..

1.Moeen Ali
2.Alex Hales
3.James Taylor (c)
4.Joe Root
5.Ben Stokes
6.Jos Buttler (wk)
7.Adil Rashid
8.Chris Woakes
9.Chris Jordan
10.Tymal Mills
11.Steve Finn

For me the top 4 picks itself, particuarly with Taylor as captain. He is the future.. Stokes at 5, gets a chance up the order, like he does for Durham, and can get through 10 overs if needed.. Buttler at 6, for the powerplay etc.. Rashid as the leg spinner, offers something different, and at 7 isn't out of place... Woakes takes the new ball, like he should be doing...he's a swing bowler, give him the new ball.. Jordan isnt useless, just short of confidence, give him a proper run in the side, and give him a role with the ball and im sure he will flourish.. Mills is a random one, i know, but left arm variation, genuine pace, 145 kph+ every ball, and a new start at Sussex, should help him progress, and Finn, is also in the side... he needs confdence and a fresh start, and as the leader of the attack, he may well enjoy the responbility, and so he may get back to bowling out and out quick, like we know he can..

i would add rashid to that list, he was the outstanding english bowler in the royal london cup and deserves a chance

he would also hopefully increase our wicket taking potential in the middle overs

he is a potential match winner if we are willing to invest some time and show some faith in him

we may as well play him and moeen then our terrible seamers will have to bowl less overs

my team after the world cup would be

hales
moeen
taylor
root (c)
stokes
buttler (wk)
billings
rashid
woakes
jordan
someone else (refuse to pick finn again until he gets back to his old pace)

plenty of batting, plenty of bowling and all good fielders. you could even call it a modern one day side

I think they should cast their net wide and look at a big squad of players. I wonder if there are a number of players in the CC who might step up, as Moeen has. For the next couple of years 25-35 players could be rotated through the ODI and Lions teams and then a smaller squad develop from there.

I also have a feeling that the Lions who were heavily beaten a few years ago in Australia (that Stokes and the Kent player were sent home from, Coles) may have diminished the confidence of the selectors of those next in line to the side at the WC. Except Taylor did really well in a debacle, and he didn't get to step up.

I'd guess that the main change would be to move on the coaching staff.

England could do worse than simply selecting the Lions side that played in South Africa recently.

As well as getting rid of Moores I would add James Whitaker for the chop too.

Another "Jobs for the boys" appointment.

And Flower.

And what does Farbrace do? I think his job is a result of Flower thinking the post was too demanding on his time. But if the coach is going to miss an occasional tour (and a new coach might not want to do that) then do you need a permanent assistant? Couldn't someone be appointed short term, as happens for Lions tours?

without wanting to sound like we are just sacking everyone I have to ask what exactly david saker is doing as bowling coach ?

time and time and time again we get smacked all over the park because we bowl too short but nothing ever changes , isn't that his responsibility ?

how many England bowlers have actually improved under him ? most seem to get worse and then have to go back to their counties to sort themselves out.

Have to agree here. Saker is the change I'd make before any other.

It's probably a case of "Too Many Cooks".

Not the Alastair variety either.

I remember when he was first appointed and shane warne talked about him having played together for Victoria and warne always said he wasn't someone who would focus on technical issues with bowlers but was great strategically and coming up with plans for dealing with batsmen

not seen a lot of evidence of that in the ODI game

on the bowling side there is a guy I have mentioned a couple of times who doesn't appear to even be on the radar , david payne of Gloucester

he has taken 80odd wickets in 44 games in list A at an average of 20 and was top wicket taker in last years one day cup I believe, he is only 24 and a left arm seamer. i'll admit I don't think I have seen him play so just going on stats but isn't that the type of bowler we seem to be looking for ?
