because he is still in the selectors minds and if a batsmen was to drop out of the squad he would likely be the player called up

May as well pick a player that needs more international experience imo. They know what Bops can do, and can't.

Isn't amazing that we know exactly when the next world cup will be but we never seem to move towards one with a settled team.

Obviously they follow the usual cycle for ODI for england.
Year 1 Poor world cup usually means england plays at their best in the summer ODI with promises that ODI will be taken seriously.
Year 2 Hit and miss in the format with England not knowing the best squad but usually sticks with the same squad.
Year 3 same as year 2
Year 4 Selector start to panic since they don't know the best 15 players and the fringe players have hardly played ODI with a last minute change at the world cup.

Fans and Media have far too long have allowed substandard performance for far too long in this format and they form or place only get questioned 6-12 months away from the world cup and obviously the replacement or fringe players have hardly played any games for england either.

Or just a lack of consistancy in selection and a failure to identify players at a county level.

The last Lions side would have had a better chance of winning the World Cup than our first team from a batting point of view.

I've always had a nagging feeling that the ECB select pick more Test players for the ODI and T20 squads than merit selection due to the fact they are centrally contracted, which in its own way means we never get a good limited overs team ready to play in the World tournaments.

The T20 team that won in West Indies came about by fluke, and the other decent performances have been in home conditions.

De Villiers, Kohli, Amla, Bailey, Sangakkara, Dhoni, Dilshan, Misbah, Dhawan

then we get to the ones that don't

Teams need a balance between test and 50 over players. For instance, Bell or Cook is ok, but maybe not both.

Also, is Bailey a test player. Morgan is more one than him.

On recent evidence, Dhoni would seem more suited to test cricket than the various combinations of ten others picked to play.

Absolutely, if England are to stand a chance of winning next years World Cup then the starting XI must only consist one of the two.
