in ODIs there is always a place for someone with a relatively low s/r as long as they consistently score heavily , cook does neither

he had a purple patch when he was recalled as captain following the last world cup which is where a lot of those runs came from to get into that top ten but has been dreadful for the last couple of years

Yeah Clarke has a far higher average in the same period but same S/R.
Saying that Clarke probably needs to have a low S/R since he is probably the anchor in that team with all the other big hitters.

Cook is not even a big match player like Sangakkara and Jayawardene both those players perform far better in ICC Events then in bilateral series.
Jayawardene is usually below average in normal ODI games with an average of 33 and strike rate 78 but performs far better when the games actually matter.

Apart from the 2003 world cup :-)

Cook's place is secure so we better hope he has a good time in Aus. He has the ability to score tons, at a decent(ish) rate. Just as important, we need Hales to come good as well.

Cook is sixteenth in the last two years in terms of runs scored, averaging 32 at a SR of 73. One of those numbers should be better. Runs scored is a pretty rubbish indicator of success, as Cook has played a lot of games due to him being captain and undroppable.

Only counted games against top eight sides.

Yeah the 2003 world cup was horrible for him even 1999 was terrible for him but from 2007 onward he was good in world cup.

Averaged 60 in 2007 world cup and 50 in the 2011 world cup.

Better average and Strike rate in World cup games even when you include the horror 2003 cup where he averaged 3 with a strike rate of 36.

Judging players on career averages is nonsense, they don't indicate whether a player has improved or deteriorated in recent times.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Yes, he has a decent world cup record, especially taking into consideration the South Africa nightmare.

Actually 24th.

Must point out that this record is part of a collective failure. Only Trott averages over 40 (61 at SR86). Only Buttler of the batters has played more than 10 games and has a SR over 90 (119).

Recalled Bopara averages 30 at 83.

Against top eight sides.

In the last year, Cook is 36th top scorer (just ahead of Lendl Simmons) with an average of 30 and a SR of 70. Twenty nine games and no tons, one fifty.

Whilst he wouldn't be in my team, I do find it difficult to believe he won't score any runs in the world cup. He's made some there before, and likes bounce, although they won't all be bouncy. If it was him or Bell, I'd choose Bell, but there's not a massive difference.

The last year. OK from Bell, good for Buttler. Poor from the others.
