Given there will be rotaation it might be that the first choice eleven might not play in the first game (even apart from Root), but I was surprised to see Bess ahead of Leach. Presumably for batting.

Bess or Leach appears to be the next big selection farrago?

Depends on a plausible candidate to bat at eight. If England pick three from Anderson, Broad, Archer, Wood, then Bess will play. If Curran or Woakes plays, Leach might get a game.

I know that Bess is a 'project', but up to now he hasn't even come close to part timer Roston, in either discipline. Of course he hasn't got any 'OMG it's a spinner, what will I do now?' England batsmen to bowl at, but he hasn't shown much in the way of either control or potency.... odd flashes that's all.

Then again he is the only spinner to have any recent match experience going into a must win final test, so I think he'll keep his place

In order of the size of the question mark surrounding their name: Buttler, Bess, Anderson and Root

All in a bit of bother

Can't imagine Anderson is feeling the draft off the door. It's not obvious that he's past his peak. Even if he is of an age that it would seem likely.

England are a long way from letting Root go too. They would have him stand down as captain first.

Enjoying a bit of a red ball resurgence after a history of injury and then seemingly being pigeon holed as a white ball only bowler.

Could he be a future Tremlett, and play a key part in a milestone moment test series?

England want enforcer bowlers who crank it up to 300mph and bang it in short, the minute Robbo gets a shot and does average half the England fan following will be calling laying into him for bowling in slow motion. I cant for that reason see him lasting long or getting a shot, unless he rips someone apart first up and buys time.

The thought of the usual England approach; wreck the bowler forever by asking him to bowl 10mph more than he's capable of, makes me hope in a way he doesnt get called up. The thought of another talented medium-fast bowler crippled and playing 3 games a year isnt that exciting.

Although the lad deserves a shot. Be nice when he gets a cap, hes been bloody fantastic for us.

He has been fantastic for you. If there is no Stokes, Curran or Woakes IPL then there might be a debut v New Zealand.

How tall is he? I have read anything from 6'1 to 6'5. Also can't get a reliable height for Archer.
