"Jake Ball will have to make his Test debut in front of a full house at Lord’s instead of being bedded in gradually against Sri Lanka. It was by picking Compton that the selectors created a problem, which then had to be solved by selecting Chris Woakes to bolster the batting."

So the writer doesn't see the selection of Woakes as a like for like player for Stokes but is there because the selectors had little faith in Compton. That's a twist no one else has come up with.

Looks like a story out of nothing there - a bit like most of the hogwash that has been reported as England cricket news this week!

Not overly thrilled about the selection of Ballance given the season he's had thus far. Poor old Borthwick must be wondering what more he needs to do to get selected. Very ropy looking batting line up it must be said.

Ironically, they picked Borthwick out the blue as a crap spinner, but now he cant stop scoring runs, he cant displace anyone in a failing batting line up.

A touring squad generally has 6 pace options and 2 spin options, what should those numbers be for India? Is their any indication that the selectors are thinking ahead about the winter? I would like to see at least another spin option in place of Moeen during this coming series, Ansari perhaps.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

they might pick 3 spinners for india with the 3rd being an batting/spinning all rounder either Ansari/borthwick or both.
Ansari/Samit were picked for the UAE last winter.

Rashid and Mo are already spinning allrounders. Maybe Tredwell or Raynor will go.

Probably 5 & 3. Maybe a squad of 17 all told? Stokes at 6 will also give some extra bowling too.

However, all of the likely spinners (Ali/Rashid/Ansari) would be almost all-rounders too. Is there anyone pulling up trees demanding selection?

Tredders not having a great season so far. But there aren't many obvious options.
