I guess he is well known for his canal journeys with Pru as he is for his fine body of work

Probably lucky that he wasn't 'Harry Potter' actor, Timothy West

Kathryn Grant died in September aged 90. I bring this up weeks after the event because she's always been stuck in my head as such a standout sexy/beautiful knockout. Best known to me for her cameo in Anatomy of a Murder, and zero-budget neorealist political exposé, The Phenix City Story. Maybe more widely known for The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and being married to Bing Crosby. And was known as Kathryn Crosby. Became a registered nurse in the early sixties, while at the height of her stardom.

One can't help but notice the fact that Lynch, who is mostly know for his work on Mulholland Drive, passed away a few days after the real Mulholland Drive burned to ashes in the Palisades Fire. I once seen Lynch wax lyrical about Mulholland Drive being the history of Hollywood in a street, and say how much he loved it, and why he wanted to make a film with it as the setting..... I hope for his sake his last moments weren't spent watching it burn.

Just to note - 22nd on my worst films ever list. Don't ever watch....ever!

I thought there were interesting aspects to MD, though I left the cinema disappointed. For me, Straight Story was his best film. As a noir fan, Blue Velvet was interesting. But I'm not in the cult.

I appreciate there was a diversity there. With Eraserhead and Elephant Man and Straight Story, which were different from his signature films.

I would say that he is still best known for his first film, Eraserhead.

of course, something on Lynch has popped up on my facebook feed. The latter parts of it was interesting:

Lynch studied painting before he began making short films in the late 1960s. His first feature-length film was the independent surrealist film Eraserhead, which saw success as a midnight movie. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for the biographical drama The Elephant Man and the mystery films Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. His romantic crime drama Wild at Heart won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He also directed the space opera adaptation Dune, the surrealist neo-noir Lost Highway, the biographical drama The Straight Story, and the experimental film Inland Empire.
Lynch and Mark Frost created the ABC series Twin Peaks, for which Lynch was nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Lynch co-wrote and directed its film prequel, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, and its limited series revival. He also worked as an actor, including his portrayals of FBI agent Gordon Cole in Twin Peaks and director John Ford in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, as well as guest roles in TV series such as The Cleveland Show, Louie, and Robot Chicken.
Lynch's other artistic endeavors included his work as a musician, encompassing the studio albums BlueBOB, Crazy Clown Time , and The Big Dream, as well as painting and photography. He wrote the books Images, Catching the Big Fish, and Room to Dream. He directed several music videos, for artists such as Chris Isaak, X Japan, Moby, Interpol, Nine Inch Nails, and Donovan, and commercials for Calvin Klein, Dior, L'Oreal, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, and the New York City Department of Sanitation. A practitioner of Transcendental Meditation (TM), he founded the David Lynch Foundation, which seeks to fund the teaching of TM in schools and has since widened its scope to other at-risk populations, including the homeless, veterans, and refugees.

Not even close, GJ. You could make a convincing argument that Mulholland Drive is one of the most critically acclaimed film of all time. It wasn't that long ago for instance that the BBC did a list of top films of all time being ranked by about 200 of the world's biggest film critics, and Mulholland Drive was voted the best ever.... and it appears high on all of these types of lists. All the big critics I know considered it a masterpiece.

I'm talking about among the average punter. None of these fancy schmancy critics (Arthur aside)

and, to make it worse, I would have thought Twin Peaks was the one to rival Eraserhead for that title

Twin Peaks if we count TV. But I think most people remember him for film, even if Twin Peaks was well received/remembered. Not sure I have ever seen it, its been highly recommended to me by friends in the last 24 hours.

Of course, cultural differences here can play. I cant tell you if certain stuff became big in OZ compared to Europe. Weird thing I find about French/Belgian culture - the weirdest stuff you wouldnt imagine leaves cultural imprints that passed the UK by.

Yes, I was wondering if Eraserhead had a bigger impact in Aus.

One of the weirdest one of the lot is how popular in France Jerry Lewis was. I'd happily watch Martin/Lewis films, as I loved Dino's cool, but have never found Lewis to be funny.
The best thing I saw him in was King of Comedy.

The best example I can think off at the top of my head is how critically acclaimed the Full Monty is in France. They see it not as a throw away British Comedy, but as a masterpiece of social commentary.
