How long into retirement do we give him before he inevitably writes a book throwing everyone under the bus for a million quid?

I say 18 months, Max.

I hope he picks some comically bad nicknames for people like Mitchell Johnson he didn't get on with, like KP did . Mitch the B*tch??? Too obvious, and considering everyone he played with is called Mitch, too much possibility for confusion.

Maybe he will go Brett Easton Ellis and have a whole chapter dedicated to Johnson's "biker from the village people" moustache. I would literally buy the book if that was the case...

I might Instagram him with some ideas.

He may not write, of course, all those tears might spoil the paper, so you could offer to write down his dictation for him

If you can come up with a witty nickname that links the words, Root, tw@t and barstool, I'm sure he'd find it hard to resist

Just occured to me after many years that Joe Root has a very unfortunate name in Australian slang terms... To "Root" someone I think means to give them one in Ozzy parlance.

When I lived in Canada, they have a clothes shop called "Roots" that was always 90% full of Aussie tourists buying everything in sight. Was the equivalent of a shop where everything has f**k written on it.

I have assumed it morphed from "rut".

Yes, I was amused when living in Canada about this too. Girls walking around with a large Roots on their chest is almost too much for an Aus male to ignore. I refrained from buying any of their gear, as in my experience, it turned out to be false advertising.

I am very pleased to see Beau Webster have a very decent start to his test career.

Living in Tasmania, I have been watching his claims being pressed the last couple of years. He has thoroughly deserved his selection this test. This Sheffield Season he has averaged 50 with the bat, but last season is was just below 59. I was pumping for him when Green was injured.

In fact last season he scored over 900 runs and took 30 wickets - only the third time in Shield history this has been done. The other two were both by Garfield Sobers, more than 60 years ago, so he is in good company there.

As the Australian test side obviously is in need of generational change, a few people have complained about Webster's selection, saying he is too old at 31. I think he probably has another 5 years of top cricket in him, so should do fine - and as he has played a lot of Shield cricket, he will be an experienced head, a calming influence on some of the young upstarts that will be getting a run soon - Sam Konstas, at least, is bound to need some reigning in occasionally.

I was impressed with how he seems to have seemlessly slotted in to test cricket - a couple of good early catches (cutting off Steve Smith both times, I think), useful change-up bowler, and very calm and measured first innings (top scoring, involved in the only 2 partnerships of note).

Good going, Beau, keep this going.

Agree completely... the value of experience and a level head. Might be questions about fitting him and Green both in the team but a nice problem to have...

Aussies have a history of fitting late career players into their side, like Stuart Clark, Adam Voges, Mike Hussey, many others. Particularly at at the end of an era of a settled side.
