Arthur Crabtree wrote:My personal favourite innings was his 119* in Bridgetown in 2004, which I expect I've commented on in the past. But objectively, it's his batting in SL. His 200* off 231 balls in Christchurch attracted a lot of attention.

Tough like Allan Border in the middle. But not so much off the pitch.

I would put Bridgetown 98 in his top 2-3. The innings in 2004 was on a difficult pitch, but the one in 98 was vs Bishop, Ambrose and Walsh... although Ramps scoring 150 probably means all three must have had food poisoning.

I think part of the attraction of the '04 innings is Thorpe cut much more of an inspiring figure by '04. It was Thorpey saving the England batting yet again, with the next highest score 17 by Vaughan. And there was more goodwill around the side generally.

Don't forget that 04 win in the WI is still the only time England won a series there in the last 64 years.

His ton v SA at the Oval gets plenty of supporters.

I was very sad to hear this news.

Two years since whatever happened happened, with no inkling of what it was in all that time. It makes me wonder whether his passing at the age of 55 might actually have been the best outcome for him

He was a very fine player

His wife has revealed that it was suicide brought on by depression and his recent time in hospital was after a previous attempt to kill himself. She says she made this public so people will be aware of the health issues.

I don't suppose the widespread sympathy the news provoked and the many tributes would have made any difference had he known. But it is at least ironic that someone who was so valued by so many, took his own life.

Mental health issues tend to fight against someone's sense of rationality, so I doubt it would matter.

French film actor Alain Delon at 88. The best looking man who ever lived. And star of one of my favourite thrillers, Plein Soleil.

Not heard about that.

He was married to for a time, or at least a couple with, Claudia Cardinale. Who is probably the best looking woman I've ever seen.

According to Wiki, that's him.

Not aware of his politics. I know Claudia was a liberal though.

Was a close friend of Jean-Marie Le Pen, and his politics can be summed up by the fact that he had a huge, public fallout with Marine Le Pen because he considered her Diet Coke brand of racism to be a betrayal of true neo-Nazi values. He then funded and promoted other right wing extreme parties who were a bit less shy about their hatred of anything not white. He was an antisemite, a mysgonist and was actively involved in funding causes that were against the LGBTQI community, and reguarly said homophobic things openly. He was also arrested for stockpiling an amazing arsenal of weaponary and ammunition.

When Cannes honoured him a few years back, it caused quite a firestorm in France. A man of widespread unpopularly, and basically no platformed outside of the extreme right ...
