well, if they can't get at least 20 overs a side in tomorrow, which is hardly what the one day cup is about, then they'll have to settle for sharing the trophy. There is almost nothing to like about any of that. I get that the weather is always an uncertain factor in cricket, but you have to give yourself a chance, don't you?

The ECB continually strive to not give cricket a chance

guardians of the game........... I'll leave you to finish that off

Seems harsh considering his impressive record in Tests , even if he is a "difficult" individual , as some reports seem to suggest.

I don't think it needs Sherlock Holmes to work this out, Alfie. Rob Key says he wants sheer pace and doesn't have any time for Medium-fast bowling, Carse makes the team and Robinson disappears after. The team is being picked pretty much exactly as Key has said he wants it, so I dont think we need to drag up Robinson's (very distant) past transgressions to character assassinate him. His crime is bowling accurately at 80mph, which ironically is the same speed England 4 best seamer in the last 25 years all bowled, but yeah... apparently Woakes (Englands best bowler this summer), Anderson, Broad and Robinson are all useless in test cricket.

I hear a lot of "Robinson is not at top form/fitness".... Carse took 4/420 all year, hasn't played since May in a 4 day game, and averages 13 more in FC cricket than Robinson..... makes complete sense to drop the seamer with the best wicket average since Fred Trueman for such unbelievable performance from Carse.

The most amusing thing about all this is, we still hear a lot of the "but can he bowl in Australia" stuff. England seem, contrary to any actual evidence, to be utterly convinced they can only win in Australia with average quality bowlers who bowl quick. Robinson apparently isn't up to the job, because without swing and seam and green tops, he is rubbish...

Man of the match in Pakistan last time on what Cricinfo declared one of the flattest (if not the) flattest wicket ever.... One of the best averages in decades in Australia in his only tour.....

When he went out to Australia to work on his game in the winter of 19/20, Jason Gillespie said that he left a lasting impression on Aussie wickets and the batsman he faced. Gillespie thought the conditions were perfect for him.

But hey, what would a respected and successful international coach who worked personally with about 10 top ten ranked test bowlers and who spent 10 years playing in Australia's greatest ever test team know about bowling in Australia compared to some guy who spent most of his years tearing through the lunch buffet more than quality bowlers?

If Stokes can stand he will be playing. If he can't bowl I agree the above will be playing. Won't be able to watch it as no tv has bought the rights. It won't be SKY and not worth subscribing to TNT.

Carse's batting statistics may look useful on paper, but there are a couple of major red flags in this record that make me think on paper it looks a hell of a lot more useful then it is in reality.

The first is the average innings played per match is abnormally low for a player who has batted as high as 6, and is never a true tailender. 1.3 innings per match tells me that he bats in easy conditions most of the time, because to be in an allrounder-lower order slot in a team that does not dominate and win regularly without needing second innings wickets in hand and bat so irregularly on average is really not normal. I mean take Ravi Jadeja... averages slightly more innings per match in tests in India in a period where (a) India averaged the most runs per wicket ever in history (b) their rivals averaged historically low against them (c) Ravi bats the majority of his test career at home in 8-9 slot. Gilchrist in Waugh's hey day... 1.4. Mitchell Starc batting at 8-11 in a period where Australia also had their highest average wicket scoring in their history at home... still more than Carse per game. So yeah. Even the teams in history who scored the most runs, won by the biggest margins, etc... didn't have non true tailender bats batting so little amount of innings.. it tells me he is playing on a lot of wickets that dont produce wickets/batting friendly.

Secondly, high proportion of not out boosts that average.... Robinson scores 18 runs per innings, Carse only 24..... in fact, and in support of the above, Carse only has 50 dismissals in 48 FC games. Again this is a pretty incredible stat for a non tailender, but it has a huge effect on his bating average. For instance the not outs add 7-8 runs onto his average, Robinson only 1 run.

bloody modern day cricketers..... soft as sh1te! :angry

Weddings can be rearranged and you wouldn't have seen Botham coming home for something as trivial as the birth of a child.... he'd have finished all his touring and when he got home he'd have patted the sprog on the head before going out on the tiles

proper cricketers in them days :laugh

@willis_macp

Expect Sky to complete a late deal to broadcast England’s tour of Pakistan, and send a team to cover it. The rights for next year’s Ashes also available - be interesting to see if TNT retain Australia’s home internationals
