Downton at this point is surely just digging his own grave. There's no way he'll survive any meaningful overhaul at the ECB.

I'm surprised that Colin Graves hasn't commented as far as I'm aware on this latest shambles as he's been pretty outspoken so far in his short tenure. Significantly he hasn't offered any support or defence of either Moores or Downton.

It's going to take a lot more than changes in personnel for England to seriously compete in ICC tournaments. Domestic one day cricket in recent seasons has been in neglect with the ECB often tinkering with the format, to a point where the One Day competition is no longer prestigous and counties made it less of a priority than the County Championship and Twenty20. Understandable at the time when Twenty20 success was rewarded with Champions League cricket and England becoming a force in test cricket.

Then there is the culture of selecting ODI players largely based on whether they can make the grade at test match level, as opposed to actual limited overs ability and enhancing their talents.

Another issue is the cluttered nature of domestic cricket fixtures, where teams often switch between Twenty20 and County Championship with little turnover time and thereore lowering the quality of both competitions.

They need to play in the right positions as well.

I'd like to see Buttler a bit further up the order. A big hitter like him is no good coming in with just a few overs left.

He has played in the top 6 one game less than at 7/8, and his impact at his normal slot brought absolutely sweet FA. Stokes has batted like a tailender in all but one of his near 25 ODI matches, he has batted with no aggression in the top order, and his bowling got to the point where the captain could no longer rely on him to complete his overs, or even throw him the ball on patchy occasions.

He needs to hit more than a few innings to convince that he can be a use in either discipline at ODI level.

Quite the opposite, a difficult start would have been England scraping in to the knock outs and losing in the quarters. Such a shambolic performance gives him the momentum to make changes.
