What England should do is appoint Giles as an interim coach till after the World T20 when they can review his performance and then make a decision. What they'll likely do is appoint him full time.

I'm staggered by the suggestion that Flower is to remain a selector. Selection and developing players has been his greatest weakness for four years! Get the likes of Geoff Cook into that role, someone with a proven track record of identifying and developing talent, not someone who has bungled and damaged the careers of many young English players.

I know nobody ever likes to take ECB statements at face value ; but is it really so unreasonable to believe that it was agreed that one coach across all formats was desirable (something I would definitely agree with ) and that Flower wasn't prepared to take that on ?
Would make sense seeing as he had only got shot of the limited overs role a year or so back.

Puts Giles in pole position. Though he would want to go OK in West Indies and Bangladesh in a de facto audition.

I would have been happy to see Flower continue ; but I accept that even good coaches have a shelf life , and perhaps his was more or less up. In any case , if it were done , twere well it were done quickly.

Good luck to Giles (or whoever) . And thanks to Flower for what he did achieve.

It seems desirable to the ECB when they see a coach they want to take charge of all formats and undesirable when they don't.

The desirability of one coach may be their latest stance on the matter, but it'll probably change, given time.

You'd think from reading the BBC's website that one of the criteria for a new coach is to be able to manage KP. Absolutely terrible analysis.

One can only hope that it's not in the ECB's job description or in any part of the due process or reasoning behind any appointment.

The media love to play up the KP angle as often as possible.

They seem to forget that there's at least 10 other players in the dressing room, none of whom seem to have been backing Flower at the end.

Delighted Jason Gillespie's head hasn't been turned with the England head coach vacancy and is fully committed to the White Rose County.

Lets face, the England head coach job would be a step back from the Yorkshire one.

Especially as Pietersen's international career, if not yet over (as it should have been a while ago), must be very close to its end.

The BBC are as guilty as any other rag when it comes to uninformed speculation.

Well he has failed in the Champions Trophy we should have won in damp, wet conditions. He lost to NZ, Austraila twice and India, and the only thing we did win was against NZ away in ODI's. Some of his selections have been rather bizarre.

Out of the names suggested, Gary Kirsten would be my pick.... but the job is Giles's, that I am at least 90% sure of.. (although I was 99.9% sure this time last week).
