There is too big a risk involved here. Backing up big names has led to the current downfall of Indian Cricket. To me, SRT is just another player when it comes to picking the playing XI. If Tiwari, Pandey or Pathan is playing better then SRT, I would not hesitate axing SRT for the sake of team.

We need to come out of the shadows of these Cricket giants that our nation has produced. At the end of the day, your performance counts and nothing else if you want to adorn Indian blue.

If SRT is that great, then may be he should show it with his bat. Reading past record books is f***ing boring.

PS. My post might come across harsh in case you did not notice..... don't mean any bad blood or ill feelings towards anyone! Rules are rules for everyone and SRT is no exception. Period.

How can so many players play in one team Indus. :hmmm We are resting only one player so we either select Rohit or Raina. If in case Tiwary is to be fielded as well along with Raina and Rohit then instead of dropping one amongst Sachin, Gautam and Sehwag, you would need to rest two .

Too early to say Sachin won't perform in near future. Just one bad series that every cricketer goes through, so i will take chill pill and ignore this series. It happens :thumb

Agreed Sachin shouldn't be an exception. :thumb But he should fail no to get dropped. Why drop him on basis that he might fail in future series because he has failed in one :dunno

Since Tendulkar has the most experiance of playing in Australia then why is he playing in this series at all?

If the rotational policy is designed to give as many players the experiance as possible then why is a player who has multiple tours under his belt part of the rotation policy? Especially when his inclusion is part of a policy which is excluding the only member of the trio who is in any semblance of form.

Makes bugger all sense to say; well we'll rotate to give players experiance, but we'll rotate in a player who has vastly more experiance at the expence of a player who has less experiance and is in better form.

Surely if experiance is the name of the game then Tendulkar should only be playing from time to time to keep his eye in.

IMO there is no point going without Sachin, Sehwag and Gautam for a tour like Australia. There has to be a mix of experience and freshness when you want to experiment. Tremendous pressure on Dhoni and selectors as "Team India' got whitewashed overseas in England in tests and ODI's. He won't have liked to lose this overseas ODI series as badly at least. So he does not experiments too much. Also Sachin was resting , so he was by default selection.

Well if you want to have Sehwag, Tendulkar, and Gambhir, all three should be playing every game then, or what is the point of having all three in the squad unless one of them is strictly there as a squad player.

The current situation has become utterly farcical; "we want experiance" so we are rotating less experianced players out of the team, "We need to have Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gambhir" so we insist on not playing all three, etc etc etc.

Sorry but you can't have your cake and eat it, the only saving grace is; it seems know one even knows what the cake is.

As we discuss it, here is a related link about experimentation.

So as i was saying, it was indeed experimentation and Dhoni still thinks Sachin is best bet even in bad form . Clearly he would not want Sachin's retirement. Basically its the media who wants that. It's clear. :clap

Dhoni explained it well here IMO and the end of it shows why they've stopped it now.

MS Dhoni has defended the rotation policy between the three senior India openers in the triangular series, which may suggest that Gautam Gambhir might be rested for the next game despite consecutive scores in the 90s from him. After India tied their fourth match of the tournament, against Sri Lanka, Dhoni was asked if it made a lot of sense resting a batsman who had hit form. Dhoni's argument remained that the youngsters should keep getting more chances.

"What we want is, all the players should be fit by the time we come into the finals," Dhoni said. "All of them should be scoring runs by that time. It's a good exposure. Rohit [Sharma] is a very talented guy. Manoj Tiwary is on the bench. He scored in the last series that he played, so we are giving ample chances to them because these are players who, for sure, will come back to Australia once we play the next World Cup. There is no surety that some of us who are playing [will return], Sachin [Tendulkar] or Viru [Virender Sehwag] or even Gautam, all of us are 30-plus, and it's big out-fields out here. So it's about giving the youngsters a fair exposure as to how difficult it is or how easy it is, or how different it is to play here."

How difficult is it to rest a batsman who has scored 92 and 91 in his previous two outings? "As I said, what's important is to get everybody going," Dhoni said. "What may also happen is the guy who is playing all the games may get injured by the finals, and you will find someone coming in his place who has not played many games and not scored runs.

"It's a long tournament. It's four games against each opposition before the finals. The first series that I played was three games against Bangladesh, so this is equivalent to three series and then the finals. It's a very demanding tournament, in the sense that the out-fields are very big, the batsmen put pressure on you, you can get injured at any time. If you are looking to save that one run and you are in a bad position to throw, you may get injured. We want all the guys to be fit, and at the same time for the youngsters to get exposure by the start of the finals… if we reach the finals."

Moreover, Dhoni said, India could afford to experiment a bit now that they have had a decent start to the tournament, winning two and tying one of their first four matches. "The interest of the team comes first," he said. "This is the time when we can really look to do that [experiment], because if were in a bad shape by the end of the fourth game, it would have been fair to say we wouldn't really be in a position to give that chance to the other players. And we would have had to be careful.

"Now we are in a position where we can do that. It's good to see Gautam scoring runs. We want to see Viru get runs and Sachin also to get runs so that the best XI comes and plays the finals."

It's not always you and Sachin vs the world. Look at it objectively; Dhoni doesn't expect Sehwag and Sachin to play 2015, as such it is not clear he doesn't want Sachin to retire after this series. There's nothing clear about it, in fact. It depends when he feels you need ultimately plan a settled team to peak for 2015, he's said before he would take a decision himself in 2013.

I didn't mean the world, i meant those who wan't Sachin to retire. Wrong sentence phrasing my me, but i am not as good at English as rest of you guys so kindly adjust language barrier :|

I am not talking about 2015, i am saying that Dhoni does not wants Sachin to retire after this series, neither do selectors. There has been no interviews by Dhoni where he says that. It is some section of media and fans who want Sachin's retirement. It's a media bubble which Indian think tank and selectors won't think much about. At the most Sachin will be rested on his request like in previous series and will be back when needed.

You see however this is where the wheels slightly fall off, if India are going to consistantly refuse to play Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gambhir in the same team using the reasoning of giving the younger guys a go, then what does it really matter if Tendulkar retires today?

Regardless of what he does, Dhoni seems determined not to play his strongest team, so you might as well just stick with Gambhir and Sehwag full time and let Tendulkar pop in when ever one of them wants some gardening leave.

Erm, no, Dhoni is determined to give the youngsters chances as long as it is not affecting the teams performances too much. With 2 must win games, he's gone back to all 3 seniors. The flaw was that he expected to make the finals. Although not many would have necessarily seen SL going top.
