i wasn't on CMS back then adi so cant comment.

i've been watching cricket for over 30 years now and during that time sachin would be one of the players i admire the most. his conduct on and off the field as well as the incredibly high standards he has been able to maintain throughout his career are nothing short of awesome. when he does get this milestone, an achievement that will never even be approached by another player let alone beaten imo, then he will deserve it.

doesn't mean i am not gonna call things how i see them when something happens like it did the other day.

I did say that if it was a very easy single then he should have taken it.

just one other thing , i dont see whats wrong with admitting hes selfish or relishes setting records or achieving milestones.

its that selfishness and desire that have helped make him the player he is. without those qualities he probably wouldn't have achieved what he has and and probably wouldn't still be playing at the level he is after all these years.

What I don't understand is why we judge players characters so much, vbe it tendulkar, Gambhir, Strauss, Prior, Ponting, Gayle etc.

To be honest all cricketeers are human, like you and me.

Don't see why we have to add moral judgement on them.

We do it with our Footballers all the time.

Now, to me John Terry comes across as an arrogant so and so but he might be an ok bloke?

Also, it must be difficult not to be a little bit big headed if you were a pro Footballer.

True Ginger.

But in Cricket I always feel that people dramatise every little incident, I find cricket pretty much incident free compared to most sports I follow. I mean we argue about 10% fees, one match ban, and shoulder contact (soft one mind you, not even a bruise, just a brush).

and of course there is evil BCCI, I guess people need to indentify good guys and bad guys everywhere.

I think this article says a lot about both Chappell and Tendulkar....

http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/conte ... 39968.html

"My biggest regret was falling out with Sachin over him batting at number four in the one-day team," PTI quotes Chappell as writing in his new autobiography, Fierce Focus. "It was a shame because he and I had some intense and beneficial talks together prior to that. My impatience to see improvement across the board was my undoing in the end. The mistakes I made were not particularly 'western' but the same kind of mistakes I had made as a captain in my playing days. I didn't communicate my plans well enough to the senior players. I should have let guys like Tendulkar, (VVS) Laxman and (Virender) Sehwag know that although I was an agent of change, they were still part of our Test future." Chappell has also admitted that he was at times abrupt in his dealings with some of the players. "Once in South Africa, I called in Sachin and Sehwag to ask more of them, I could tell by the look on their faces that they were affronted. Later [Rahul] Dravid, who was in the room, said, 'Greg, they've never been spoken to like that before'." One thing his time as coach did help him understand was the huge amount of pressure Indian cricketers are under, especially Tendulkar. "A glimpse of them was a life-changing event... We were playing an unrelenting amount of cricket to satisfy the demand, at least 50% more than Australia were playing and the pressure was beyond belief. Nobody was carrying that pressure more than Sachin. Not even Don Bradman carried expectations like this, and Sachin had been bearing it since 1989. When the team travelled, he would snap on his headphones, not look sideways, and shut it all out. There was a constant frenzy trying to get in at him. The energy it would have taken for him to let that kind of excitement in would have drained him dry."

1992: no. 4, and exit at group stage
1996: opening, and semifinals
1999: no. 4, and exit at super 6 stage
2003: opening, and finals
2007: no. 4, and exit at group stage
2011: opening, and champions

There's a correlation there, think even Chappell might understand it.

Also, the position of coach in India is slightly different to anywhere else. To be honest, if anyone has a right to do what they want in the game of cricket then it is this man. If I was coach and he came to me and said "hey I want to open," then knowing his talents, there is no way I would stop him...

Somebody who thinks Tendulkar is God referred me to this 2007 article by Ian Chappell:
http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/co ... 87961.html

How well have a self-proclaimed pundit's rash predictions been thrust so comprehensively down his narrow throat! Getting stuffed, as they say in America.

Came across this : :no
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/spor ... 997477.cms

Those who say Sachin should quit perhaps have no idea about Sachin as a cricketer and his commitment to cricket even when he is not on tours and staying in Mumbai. Come to Mumbai and i will take one to the grounds where Sachin practices. Note the time he spends in nets, his practice methods and then the fans will have a different view about Sachin being selfish. The problem is that theoretical knowledge is much widespread than practical and inside knowledge. All it takes to jump over an Indian cricketer by Indian fans is one bad series. One bad series over shadows the performance of 20 successful years of cricketer. :D It also seems to me that the sensational articles are influencing the minds of the readers easily nowadays.

I did read on 606,CMS and some other forums around 2008/09 that Sachin should be dropped. I can see the similar trend this year referring to newspaper articles and some threads on forums. newspapers, articles etc. Sachin's batting form at the top of the order was a major contributor in India winning the 2011 WC. After that outstanding series, this is perhaps his first ODI series in which he has not performed anywhere near a specialist batsman's reputation. If the selectors listen to fans who want a player to be dropped on performance in one series then no cricket team will be stable. To drop someone of Sachin's caliber sounds more shocking to me. Sachin will know when his body will not be able to cope up to deliver skills he possesses. IMO he will retire rather than Saurav's speculations that there is no one who will ask Sachin to step down from game. Like the well behaved people do not need law to tell them how to behave, Sachin does not needs someone to tell him when to retire. He has played the game as sportingly as any cricketer, as humbly as he could on and off the field and as unselfishly as possible. It's not about his 100th hundred that keeps him on the field. One good series and he will have a couple of more hundreds. If a cricketer does not scores enough centuries during his tenure, he gets criticized. Now that some one has scored 99 centuries they are criticizing him for going for the 100th
