I am not contesting the point here, Mr. Shanks! SRT should have taken the bye if he was in perfect position for it. But pure speculations about SRT being disrespectful to WI, WI being rubbish and Indians rubbing it in by not taking byes, couple of WI bowlers feeling satisfied "internally" can and should be avoided. I mean how can someone "know" what a particular player was thinking?

There has got to be a difference in expressing one's opinion and speculation about Cricketer's internal feelings, right? SRT did not take a legbye when he could have. Fair point, says me. How about we don't light a fire on everything, making it more controversial than it is? We sometimes display attitude worse than bunch of sorority sisters in a kitty fight!

That what Tendy did is 100% controversial to fans like me...I would never condone that kind of actions in cricket...Were you in agreement with Angelo Matthews doing something similar against England earlier this year in an ODI so Chandimal can get to his maiden ton?

I think what Sachin did was wrong. But to compare it to the Mathews/Chandimal is (sorry mike,I agree with you 95% of the time) quite frankly ridiculous. What Mathews did could have cost his team a victory.Thats not at all the case here.I cant imagine even in the wildest of my imaginations Sachin doing something that could prove detrimental to his team.If you look at it what he did was actually in favour of his country. His countrymen wanted to see their team win AND Sachin scoring his hundredth 100.He didnt harm the victory chances of his country in any way and by refusing that leg bye he only increased the chances of his hundredth 100 which all his countrymen and teammates wanted to see. I dont think anyone in India is bothered one bit about him refusing to take that leg bye.And he plays cricket for his team and his countrymen and what he did was never going to harm his team's fortunes nor would it upset his countrymen.
As an Windies,I can see where Mike is coming from but you have got to remember that he doesnt play for the West Indies or their fans.
As I said, I dont agree at all with what he did.But its nowhere near as bad as what it is being made out to be.You have got to remember that he is human after all and can make mistakes. It was a spontaneous decision taken at that time and spontaneous decisions can often go wrong and I am sure looking at the replays he must be regretting it(not because he got out to the next ball but because it didnt seem right).
I really dont see the need for such hard feelings.

however i was watching live when it happened and when he turned down the leg bye then got out the next delivery my initial thought was "serves you right for not taking the leg bye"

it was laxman's call and laxman was halfway down the wicket when sachin sent him back, it was a blatant single and he was obviously thinking of the number of runs left imo when he sent laxman back

:clap
My feelings exactly....

Well, your feelings seem to be unable to get hold of themselves about this, Mr. MikeSiva :D I am still looking for a follow up comment on your - "SRT being disrespectful to WI" thought! Not to mention, you are able to see/read WI players' internal feelings ;)

You are absolutely right about that - SRT is not a god :) However, he is known to be a modest player too and would be the last person seen being disrespectful to his opponents! Some perspective, people :texas!

Mike
You just said that Sachin put personal goals above team goals for a moment.

I would really like to know how him turning down the leg bye affected the team goals :?
It might have annoyed the West Indies but I really dont understand how it affected the team goals :dunno

Ok if you're going to continue this, this is maybe relevant.

Dravid's take on Sachin's criticism, I posted this earlier in this thread, it is from some book on Sachin.

Yet, for all his achievements Sachin has sometimes been treated harshly. This is partly because of the high standards he himself has set. Successful players tend to be judged more harshly than others. That, I suppose, is a backhanded compliment. It is a recognition that more is expected because the player has more to give. Of course, excessive criticism hurts and Sachin is human after all (it is important to remember this!), but he also knows that as a public figure he will be critiqued for his performances even if unfairly at times. All sportsmen are prepared for this.

On his bad days, Sachin's worry is not what people will think if he fails, but how much it will hurt the team and his teammates. We have spent hours together, talking, discussing batsmanship and, as is inevitable when you spend so much time together in stress situations, have been both honest and unguarded with each other.

To me, it is incredible that someone who has been playing continuously for over two decades retains the essential innocence and vulnerability of childhood. Sachin is no Peter Pan, the child who never grew up; rather he somehow nurtured the child in him so that even after more Tests and more runs and more centuries than anyone else, he plays with the enthusiasm and competi-tiveness of a child whose whole world is encompassed by those 22 yards.

When we walked off the field after beating Australia in Bangalore, my home town in October 2010, we were both highly emotional. But we hardly spoke to each other. Each knew exactly what the other was thinking and there was no need for words. Sharing a dressing room with Sachin has been a privilege. Sharing an unspoken thought raises a relationship above the merely professional. In over a decade and a half there have been many such moments. I cherish them just as much as I cherish the runs we made together for the country.

Laxman is a bad runner. Sachin would have thought it's better to decline a run than Laxman getting out in a crucial situation. Just imagine Sachin accepting Laxman's call and Laxman getting run out. Sachin crritics would have said such a experienced player takes risky single when time and run rate does nto amtters. You can criticize cricketers anyway. I am not surprised Sachin is getting stick throughout the career whatever he does, whether he gets a 0 or 100.

adi that would only be valid if it had been a risky single

the batsmen could have got down on their hands and knees and crawled to the other end and been safe , there was so much time

i'm not criticising tendulkar for doing what he did per se , its human nature to want to get milestones and he probably is feeling the pressure of being sitting on 99 centuries for so long now and just wants to get it done and out of the way so the focus can get back on india winning and not just all about him

you mention about people wanting to give him stick no matter what he does, blindly defending his actions when it was so blatant is not helpful either tho

If you say there was enough time for Laxman to make safely then then it should have been taken.

However, he is blindly getting stick from fans. Personally i have seen some comments, made in 2008 or perhaps 2009 on CMS like "Sachin should be dropped". Although i managed to go through the posts, i remember which posters had said that. It just gives me some idea which is useful during the tenure on the forum.
