Fair enough, he probably merits a place given the options in this squad. Just saying the vote of confidence from the selectors isn't really there, because he's been dropped recently.

That was for the selectors to carry out their successful Rankin and Borthwick experiment in a "dead rubber", I believe. Not too much should be read into it.

I suppose, just as some are easily confused, some are easily mystified too.

To describe the selection of such a useful player as a "mystery" suggests a real ignorance of the game.

More like the selection of Boyd Rankin, it's not as if England are short of pace bowlers.

At this point of time Bresnan is a better selection than Rankin in Tests,ODI's and T20's. However, thats not saying much because he has to compete with Finn and Chris for third pacers spot once Jimmy and Broad get back in squad.

With Jordan, perhaps, who has shown some promise and can bat a bit. I don't think we'll see Finn back on the scene for quite some time.

Given we can now only assess Broad's value on his bowling, I'd expect him to come under some scrutiny too.

I think Bresnan underlined his value as a bowler to the team today. Crucial wickets and a decent economy rate, particularly having bowled about half of his deliveries during the power plays.

Beautiful delivery to dismiss Michael Clarke on Australia Day, that will have the Bresnan haters under their rocks.

Bresnan is slowly coming back in form. He is now the second highest England wicket taker in this series. He has justified his place in this squad at least.

Yes, Bresnan’s had a very good series and it’s difficult to think of a potential squad in which he wouldn’t be able to justify his place, even if no more than 90% fit, to be honest.

Not sure. He's been the most expensive bowler. As the senior bowler he should have been more of a lead. As Broad and Tredwell only played three of the matches, they were unlikely to take more wickets. And he's been short of pace, and couldn't get the old ball swing that Stokes managed. Against that, he bowled a very good early spell in Perth, and he justified his role as number eight bat. His useful batting is necessary to keep him in the squad.

Until this point of time i am not expecting Bresnan to be leader of the bowling attack although i take your point that the most experienced bowler with 80 ODI bowling innings should play that role when others had just few ODI experience in matches which Broad wasn't playing.Bresnan is not someone who as shown that he can run through the sides and it is reflecting in his big enough career if 80 bowling innings. What i expect from him is to support the likes of bowlers who can run throuh sides (Jimmy, Broad and Finn) by picking anywhere between 1-3 wickets. Here he did a reasonably good job in supporting the highest wicket taker, who too is far away from being a leader of the bowling attack.I agree to the point that Ben outperformed Bresnan in the test as well as ODI series with both bat and ball. Yes, his ability to score anywhere between 0- 40 runs gives him an advantage when selectors select a team.

England imo are facing the problems due to not enough prolific ODI batters in the squad. So they have to go in with a wicket keeper batsman at 7.Subsequently it forces to go with 7+4 combo.Which also means at least one of the 6 batters excpect keeper has to be all rounder and the spare bowler has to be able to bowl.I won't be surprised if they will have to keep going back to failing Joe because he can bowl spin. But every team is doing that now. What will happen imo is that we will see more scores around 300, 325 due to such team combos of all teams.England have to ensure that if they too go with such combo they should have the top 7 who can score 300,325 and even 350 at times.Unless they have 7 batters who can score that much, England or any other team that goes with 7+ combo , is going to struggle imo.To score 300, England have to get back Trott and KP.If they are unavailable and are only replaced by someone like Joe/Ballance etc, then i don't think it is going to work nowadays.Over top of that they have to rest Jimmy,Broad and Finn for various reasons.Basically this team cannot either score 325+ nor can it restrict the opposition to 260.

All teams are struggling when they tour.Even top ranked India is struggling to get even a draw in conditions which are hostile to us.But teams at top will be those who make the most in conditions which they are used to and have excellent resources plus team combos for such conditions.

Bresnan, of course, bowls many overs in the power plays so some of that criticism is a little unfair. I don't recall Stokes making the old ball swing at all (was it ever old when he bowled?). I remember him getting some fortunate wickets, though.
