It was his innings which gave England bowlers some reasonable target to defend. It is good that he has started to contribute handy runs in three ODI matches of this series played so far.imo he paced his batting innings perfectly from what is expected of someone batting at 8 and considering the match situation today.Full points to him regarding the knock.
The problem though is with his bowling.I think the Aussie batters are targeting Bresnan as well as couple of other English bowlers and disturbing Cooks plans on field. He too is getting tonked along with other pacers. There is lot of improvement needed on his bowling.Especially the performance in the last over which lost the match will need to be erased by a spectacular spell in some other match.

He doesn't offer assurance with the newer or older ball, and his batting has never been something we can rely upon, though has been an occasional bonus. He might re enter the picture with injuries. We have enough similar sorts of players who are a bit better.

Well, on that basis, that could be Broad, Finn, Rankin and Stokes out of the reckoning too.
The selectors know that Bresnan is worth picking and his showing in this series so far will have only reinforced that opinion.
If there are better options, why have they not gone for them?
It should be obvious that there is no parallel at all with Root's non selection.
