Not sure you can say playing was an issue, he played from early May basically all the way to July I would guess judging on how many games he played..... how many games does he need to play?

Sorry, whatever excuse you give, averaging 12 in a 5 match series at the start of your career indicates all I need to know about him. He was utterly rubbish, I have literally no positives. I see no reason to continue this experiment.

He's played 12 first class games this season from what I can tell, 7 of which have been Tests and 3 of which haven't been in the UK.

It's often a case when players are picked based on the previous season that they're not actually in form coming into the team.

We've seen even with very experianced players that once the form goes south it can be very difficult to get it back while playing International cricket, let alone for a player whose got so few games under his belt.

As I said above, I think Lyth needs to go back to Yorkshire and rebuild his game. I wouldn't be suprised to see him back playing for England again in the future.

How many have averaged 12 in a 5 match series, without being untouchable due to previous international experience and performance, and survived? Ian Bell is mentioned, but he came into the aforementioned series with an average of near 300 in tests, so not comparable in my book.

I couldnt name you any other specialists for England that have? I might be wrong, but none stand out. Ramps maybe, but by 7 tests he was already a one game here, one game there man

A very broad squad suggesting the selectors want to give as many options as possible so they are blameless should anything go wrong!!

6 seamers seems a lot. Let's hope it seams a lot.

If Lyth does remain, its a slap in the face to Carberry in particular.

Lyth was grossly underprepared for the summer internationals. Between the MCC Champion County match and the 1st New Zealand test, Lyth played in one CC game against Hampshire (Yorkshire had a bye week in early May). Between New Zealand and Australia, Lyth played a further two CC matches against Middlesex and Notts.

All being well Lyth can get some valuable time at the crease in Yorkshire's final two matches before the winter tours.

Is there a specific time when the squad is announced today or will they just try to sneak it out?

They will release a name on the hour every hour until Jack Bauer makes himself available for international selection.

Is it named today?

I hear Compton could be recalled. Out of the two, or three, if you include Carberry, I'm not sure who has convinced me most. It may be worth opening with Ali, though you will still need a back up. Hales?

He's a badass.

Possibly a drinking buddy of KP which means Strauss will never let him in.

So two matches at the end of the year is enough time, but a test series and 3 FC matches in the middle mean he is grossly underprepared?

These excuses are laughable.

If he cant prepare for a test series with 5 games, then he is essentially written off every tour bar the latter international test series at home. He will only get a two day game in UAE before the series!!!

He averaged 12 in the Ashes remember. 12...... there is no excuse for that, regardless of how much you dig for one.

So, squad as expected, but Hales rather than Lyth.

Stokes rested in ODIs, and Root back.

Jordan in the T20 squad.
